What I wanna know is how he kept the bike upright for so long with a locked rear wheel covered in engine oil? Shocked Shocked

A couple of years ago I rebuilt the zxr engine and forgot to tighten up the sump plug and took it down a dual carriageway, got up to about [cough] speed and as I was coming towards the end of the road I noticed all the smoke billowing out behind me and thought that I'd pushed the engine too far. As I was coming up to a round about it felt like I was riding on ice with a flat tyre, the second roundabout was even worse, it was when I pulled over and noticed all the oil on the back wheel I realised what had happened (while trying to find the sump plug I'd left a trail over a mile long with the oil)

If anything oil on a locked rear wheel probably helped him keep it upright longer. Would reduce the friction from the scraping tyre as he came to a halt. He was at a pretty manageable speed when he went down.

Had exactly the same happen to me, although I was only doing 70mph at the time. Rear sprocket carrier bearing collapsed and locked the rear wheel, scary shit.

Stupid question maybe but shouldn't he be able to unlock the rear wheel by pulling the clutch?

Depends what has broken. If it has just dumped all of its oil then it's possible that the clutch would be inoperable anyway.
