Nice idea, i wonder if they can do a disc lock along the same line.

Seems pointless. You still have to lock the bike TO something. In which case you should bring a U-Lock and attach it through the back wheel between the rear triangle to something solid.

It's also a matter of time before one of these automatically locks whilst riding the bike, causing an accident and wrecking a bike.

Some things I want automatic, like a microwave. Some things I don't. Like an automated 9mm steel bar waiting to through the spokes of my wheel upon malfunction.

Keyed versions of these are all the rage in Belgium, for it is a cyclist's paradise. Many cheap pushbikes are parked with no or token security. Many of them have rear brakes that are operated by backpedaling. I understand the general attitude is dump bicycle and that is has some kind of lock that may be engaged is enough security. Locking a bicycle like that over here would see it pikey'd in minutes.

My sister lives over there. Apparently said style of very cheap lock often fails by locking whilst on the move. Or at least that's her excuse.

Of course in areas of europe with tolerant cannabis laws and in havens for artistic types, bicycle locks that don't suddenly and unexpectedly lock (i.e. when ridden after being left locked) will probably significantly reduce bicycle related injuries.

Seems to me like that little lock is going to have to fend off a lot of vibration, temperature changes, ingress of water, dirt, dust, rust etc. With delicate electronics inside I wouldn't want to be an early adopter... seems like it's traded strength for all that gimmickry as well.

Ignoring the over-engineering of what should be a simple mechanical device, that kind of lock can be quite useful for low-value bikes. Over in Sweden they are common, and many bike racks have a tethered cable with a loop in the free end so you can put that loop through the lock bar and secure the bike to the rack. It means that you can lock up your bike safely without carrying anything with you (as long as you know that each end of your journey has said cable).

I'd still use a proper lock for a bike of reasonable value.

Great, now there's even bike locks that require an App! Evil or Very Mad

Just... .. Really? Not maybe slightly over complex for ridiculously minimum security offerings that are only suitable for a bike that is not worth nicking in the first place (other than perhaps for the value of the security technology aboard)? Confused

Another instance of the word 'smart' - I wish these designers would put as much effort into naming their products. Maybe a slap around the head might that smart.

Well i was thinking, if they could do a similar type lock that could be placed on the inside of your swingarm (so not easy to get to), locked the rear disc, set off an alarm if the bike was moved and had the tracking system built in so you could track it if your bike was thrown in a van, it might just be a handy bit of kit.
If that can work half as well as suggested in its current form then there are many companies out there that could make it better, not sure i trust the phone side to open and close it, a key would be better.
But at around £60 its possibly worth buying and just fitting under your seat for the alarm and tracking side of it, or at least waiting for the Mk2 version.

Is rather someone invented a lock which was 16 or 19mm thick steel formed into a chain. I could then pass this lock through my bike and round something solid making it very difficult to steal. That would be much better than a puny little lock
