Some young guy gets hurt at sea, which is sad but seems avoidable. Supposedly this 'engineer' can't see as sketchy as fuck system that results in his getting drownded. I agree employers should have of care, but you as a person also have duty of self preservation....

The kid is already back in UK receiving, assumedly, free healthcare. The chap is basically potato'd, and there is no description of what the raised funds will be used for (legal costs of prosecuting owners etc).

As harsh as this sounds, I agree with you. He has paid an awful price for not exercising caution. Hopefully he will die soon, unless he makes a miraculous recovery.

£5K won't buy much of a miracle, either in care or suing a Russian billionaire. I'd want the plug pulled in that situation.

I wonder if by engineer they mean someone with an engineering degree or just 'mechanic on a ship' type engineer.

Either way, for someone supposedly competent in managing mechanical systems he dun goofed.

Don't get me wrong I do stupid stuff all the time, but I know it is stupid and choose to do it anyway, taking it on the chin when it fucks up.

+1 for plug pulling, reading it my initial thoughts were 'it's a shame the poor guy didn't just cop it'

First of all I would like to point out I have no medical knowledge, so I could be talking out my arse here.... but there was something a bit strange about reading that:

Does that mean the procedure was done after the photo was taken, and if so.... why? He seems to be ventilated well enough.

I only know about the procedure because I had to have it done when I was 2 years old (can't remember it, but apparently the doctor sliced my throat and used the outer casing of his pen to allow me to breathe).

There's a reason to not leave people intubated for a long time. I cannot for the life of me remember what it is though (I cannot think that far back to my training).

Requires sedation and neuromuscular blockade, the longer you're under the less likely it is you'll come out...

Yeah, all long term ICU patients get tracheostomy tubes. Also prevents long term damage of the upper airway.

Also, the description of the event looks like it's been written by a 5 year old!
