Looking to jack in the GSR and get a GSXR600 2007-8, which ever fits budget for condition.

Is there anything I should be looking out for, any niggles with these models, any known issues with specific years, recall issues, or just anything that could give me ballache later on?

help, advice, sarcasm much appreciated.

Thumbs Up

Why the Gixxer specifically? 750, yes. 600? Not so much:

R6 is faster and more mental
CBR handles better, easier to ride unless you're tall
Kwak has a better engine, is more engaging and more green
Daytona handles better and has loads more torque.
They are all better built and don't have fasteners made of cheese.

The 600s are all much of a muchness, but I've rode the 06-09 crop and the GSXR would be last on my list, each of the others do something better. A 750 would make a lot more sense.

Food for thought. Thanks. To be honest I'm after gsxr600 cos I like the looks and style of it. Have ridden cbr6 but haven't ridden the others so nothing to compare rideablity against. Will keep an open mind I guess and keep looking.

What's the Daytona like for reliability?

I have a K6 600, can't compare to other similar bikes as I haven't ridden any of them but I really like mine. It is easy to work on using basic tools and a workshop manual and you would be surprised how far you can get with the bike's own toolkit.

There are some pro's and con's to them, as with any bike.

The reg/rec is pretty weedy and located next to where your left knee is making is almost impossible to get to the wiring unless you have tiny baby hands. Replace with a pattern part that comes with a big heat sink plate if it goes. Mine melted itself just for shiggles.

The master cylinder recall was 2 years ago, I doubt you would find one that hasn't been done unless the bike has an aftermarket master cylinder. It was a knee-jerk reaction as a couple of bikes experienced spongey brakes according to one of the US gixer (sorry, gixxer) websites.

They are very forgiving bikes though and won't have a tantrum if you go into a corner in too high a gear. As they are 600's you really need to work the gearbox to get the best out of them.

Take a variety out for a test ride though Thumbs Up

Fine. A few of the early ones drank oil and a few reg/recs have failed, but no worse than a Honda on that front.

Brother had one until last year. It was a bit small for me, being 6ft odd and 20 stone + but he loved it. Only real issue we had was the reg rec and the stator, ended up replacing both after spending ages testing bits and bobs. Fit and finish was good, held up well to the endless wheelies and abuse he gave it.

Fine. 3 years and 15k later and I've replaced nothing of any importance on it and the finish as good until I turned it into a track bike.

The Reg/rec issue - what exactly is the problem and what's the solution? Also assuming a bike hasn't had this problem addressed, is it an expensive fix if the problem cropped up?

Owning a year 2000 Honda, I feel qualified to answer this.

I took a prophylactic view of the problem and changed the reg/rec prior to it taking out any of the other electrics. I invested in a MOSFET reg/rec which is more reliable than the standard ones. I think in total; as I didn't do it on the cheap; it cost me about £150 including parts and labour to wire it in.

You could get a pattern part from Electrex but I had one blow after 6 months of usage and they weren't interested in helping me in the slightest so I cannot recommend them and feel I should warn you away. I'm sure if you have no problems they're fine, but should you have a problem, they just ignore your emails and phone calls.

Mine cost £100 for an aftermarket better quality part and a few hours to replace.
