Anyone able to recommend a cheap and cheerful 2 way radio? Literally just for bike to bike chat when on a ride with someone else that doesn't involve lots of faff (tech or physical) and won't bankrupt me. Also needs to be something you can fit in your bog standard helmet not a flip up instructor/touring style lid.

Haha you had me for a second there.

Those V5s look like faff to me, having to glue them inside my helmet and wiring the control unit into a power source is what I'm trying to avoid.

Just want a rechargeable, pocketable radio. Thanks though Thumbs Up

The Bluetooth units are not wired in to a power source. They have a rechargeable battery. As to fiddling with helmet, you put speakers in with the supplied sticky Velcro, same for mic and the cradle the BT unit attatches to clips around the helmet rim. Takes about 5 minutes, then you can just leave the speakers, mic and cradle thing on the lid. Just pop the BT unit off and charge when required.

Then you end up with

Intercom
Music
Phone
Satnav voice (if your satnav has Bluetooth)

Once set up it'll be less hassle than a radio. Which would need a PTT mounted somewhere to press when you want to talk and with a headset not mounted to the lid means you will be faffing with mics and earphones whenever you take your lid on and off.

Oh I see! That actually sounds ideal, cheers! Having another look now.

How does it work with the radio then? I take it anyone else wanting to chat would need to buy another one of these units or can it connect to another product? Is it push to talk or voice activated? Can you get more than 2 people on the same channel?

You'll want a pair to talk. Different models have different ranges so you'll have to check what the seller is saying, I think there are pairs with IC function on eBay for around £50.

How they work also varies a bit. With mine you can set an order of precedence (phone-gps-IC-music in whatever order you want). The IC is live so when using it you just chat back and forth. To answer calls you have to reach up and press the big side button but even with a winter glove that's easy enough. Volume is another 2 fairly chunky buttons on the top.

With mine I don't think you can have more than 2 units on the IC, though I've never tried more or tried pairing to another brands device. There are expensive branded ones around that advertise as being able to do stuff like that but expect to pay more for a single unit than a pair of cheaper ones.

Thanks man, much appreciated. I'm in the dark depths of ebay now, tempted to see if I can get some comrades to chip in for a more expensive package that would let you have multiple people in the same call.

Thanks! Looks like a great write up, not quite what I'm looking for though, need headsets for a bike to bike to bike to bike setup rather than bike to pillion.

My dad and I toured Germany/France using them bike to bike, with a range of around 100 meters or so. It isn't their primary use but they worked fine.

Me and my wife using now Scala Rider G4 since 3 years and it works very god. It is possible to hear radio directly on it or use it via Bluetooth with Handy/Navigation/MP3-Player.

Due the son of her is often on tour with us, he bought also a G4 for himself and his girlfriend. So we can talk on route all 4 together, if the external situation is positive for it - But it is possible!
