Sinnis Trackstar from 2012 with a Suzuki GN based engine at about 44,000 mile.
Wednesday morning on the M25 the engine cut out on the M25 at max revs. I got to the hard shoulder, put the bike onto reserve with choke on, after a few minutes it started up. It was boggy for a couple of minutes and cut out again twice before I got off the M25. I then filled the bike up, with BP 97, and although I put £7.65 of petrol in, I do not think I ran out of petrol. I usually fill up £8.50-£9.
I took a long slow route to work, mostly 30's to 50's and aside from an occasional feeling the engine was down on power it was fine.
I made it home 20 miles up the A406 and A40/M40 without incident. Thinking it was just a low petrol thing I headed out yesterday morning to work up the A40. I managed 3 mile and when I had the throttle fully open the engine cut out and wouldn’t start again.
A long push home and many attempts at starting the bike later.
I can hear the starter working when I press the ignition switch but the engine will not start.
I can see the spark on the spark plug but it looks yellow not blue. I tried an old spark plug I had replaced that was not worn out and I see the same yellow spark? Did try to start it too many times on the way home and may have run battery down.
I put the spark plug in, removed the plug cap, pressed ignition, took spark out and it had a dry tip, from what I understand it should be wet?
Where do I look now? |

When it died, did it lose power and then cut out, or did it cut out abruptly without warning? Former is likely to be fuel, latter is likely to be electrics.
Sight unseen, and assuming that you have a petcock rather than a fuel pump or vacuum tap, I'd probably go in this order:
On general principle, check battery voltage, charge up, and check/clean the main earth strap because (stinkwheel?) "most fuelling problems are electrical".
Crank, remove plug, smell for fuel. Drop a teaspoon of unleaded down the hole, plug back in and and see if it fires.
Fuel tap off, disconnect hose from tap to carb, stick end in jar, tap on, verify that fuel comes out.
Give carb a whack with a rubber mallet or similar to unstick float.
Drain carb, allow to refill.
Then you're into disassembling the carb to check the float and clean the jets.
If you don't already have a fuel filter fitted in your line, I'd order one now. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

About 70,000 KM, I am waiting for the inevitable 'thing going wrong'.

Sudden I think. First time it was a bit here and there trying to get it going again, felt boggy, yesterday morning was sudden. Also, my experience thus far has been the Sinnis' electrics have been fragile, and there was a recent theft attempt. Every theft attempt and electrical explosion so far has caused a series of other electric faults to happen.
Left battery charger at work, so will have to head into town and buy a new one. Doh.
Thank you for the long reply! |

Oh dear.
I figured as it was going to be sitting in my garden this week until I fixed the electrical issue I would shove it into the corner and cover it up.
I noticed the oil glass looked awfully clear while putting the cover on. Odd. I only filled that up the other day. A glance and wiggle later and I realise underneath where the 3 nuts go in holding the plug and filter up 1 is loose, 1 is missing, and the other is present.
I let the cold oil out and barely get a dribble.
I am guessing that’s a seized engine.
If anyone wants me I will be sorting out a push bike and crying in the corner. |
