Bike Not Starting : Fixed

Sorry for the long post in advance.

Bikes was struggling to start, it would eventually start up but would take a while cranking over and the lights would go dim on the the dash etc.

Bought a new battery and plugs, popped them in. Bike started better but it was still slightly hesitant.

Anyway, bike got worse throughout the day progressively until it wouldn't start at all on the button. Bump starts easy enough. The starter motor also made some nasty noises when I tried starting it in its last moments.

So, bought a multimeter and the battery reads 12.6 when ignition is on and 14.4 when idling.

I'm thinking starter motor or alternator may be the culprit.

You could first of all check the spark plug. This will give you am indication of whether its a fuel or ignition fault.

Failing that try cleaning the starter and checking the starter brushes and making sure the starter cliutch disengages.

How are your valve clearances doing?

Does the starter spin happily...does it seem as fast as usual?

Went to take the starter off, not as easy as it looked...

When sitting on the left side of the bike (next to side stand) the bolt to the left holding in the starter motor is awkward to get to with a socket or screw driver. Other one is easily accessible & came off easily.

A mate reckons he's got a ratchet that'll fit in their & will bring it round Tuesday.

May also just order a starter motor, they're not silly money when used and I've got a feeling it's the starter that's shat itself. Opinions?

Ordered a used starter motor and the lead from the starter motor to relay.

Arrives Tuesday or Wednesday, so will fit it then hopefully Smile

Starter motor ended up being the culprit. Replaced it with a used one off ebay which arrived today and it works perfectly fine now & fires up first time with no issues or odd noises.

Managed to smash one of the magnets when pulling the old starter motor apart, ignoring that, what do you think could of caused it not to work? Looks a bit gunky in there, apart from that looks alright to me... But then again I've never looked at a starter motor before while it's apart.
