Due soon to go in for CBT then purchase a 125cc scooter, was a biker back in the day as a teenager for a short while with friends off road I'm looking to buy for work purposes mainly to help save money on taxi/buses, it's probably going to be a Lexmoto or a Sinnis I just wondered if any advice out there, thanks guys, first post of many as new member.
Also the dealer I'm going to does a deal of a helmet/gloves/jacket/lock for £150 good deal?
Got my eye on the new Lexmoto Diablo

I'm leaving a open mind towards Chinese bikes as they seem to of previously got bad press but reviews of recent I like the 2015 editions anyway, what would I be expected to be paying on insurance too I'm a first rider and I'm 42yrs old, thanks!

Sorry, no idea about Lexmoto's scooters. Their geared bikes tend to be reasonable, but that Diablo 'sports' scooter is a bit of a cheeky description - how on earth do they get so little power out of those engines? Eh?

Insurance is a complete lottery. I'd expect anything quotes of between £100 and £10,000, and that's not entirely flippant.

Hi,

Are you looking to buy brand new? If so, perhaps consider a used one instead that someone has had for a year then moved to a bigger bike. You would miss the big drop in value from the initial sales price and potentially get a bargain (more money to spend on the riding gear).

As for insurance prices. I have a Suzuki GS125 and for TPFT with 1 year NCD it is (£70). I'm 37 and only a provisional licence at the moment. That was Devitt insurance and I went through quidco to get £25 cashback too! Very Happy When I had a Chinese scooter, I did find the insurance a bit higher and less easy to get a quote as mine didn't show up on the system (Yamati Eurostrada!)

50/50.

Arrow Yes in a way that if you just want any old gear (obviously that fits) and a lock to get you started on a budget then sounds like an idea to consider.

Arrow No in a way that it's most likely the cheapest set of kit and clearance stock attempting to be sold in a coating of sugar to new riders such as yourself.

Most scooter riders only wear a helmet anyway so depends what your comfortable with.

Don't bother buying a 125, I did my DAS after a long break away from biking and then just bought a 'big' bike first.
I only rode a 125 for the first 10 mins of my CBT after which I was switched on to an unrestricted Fazer 600
by my instructor, completed my CBT on that and did DAS immediately afterward all on the schools bike.
I'm not sure I'd have ever really respected a 125. Even after donkeys years away from riding, the YBR
I started doing my CBT on felt tinny and breathless. But I immediately respected the bigger bike.
It felt like it had endless gears and unlimited power. It didn't but it felt like it and I believe that just a little fear
makes you a better learner.

I could already ride a bike, I just relearned on something a bit meatier, that's all. Laughing
Glad I didn't take the long way round to a full licence. As for insurance. I'm also 42,
my insurance on my 2013 ER6F is £139 full comp with lid and leathers cover, RAC membership,
insured to ride other bikes, cover for overseas touring, and the all important legal cover.
I can also add and remove mods as well as this years insurer (Bennetts) also covers modded bikes. Thumbs Up
That's with zero voluntary excess and £200 compulsory.

I honestly got it into my head that my first years insurance with zero bike no claims was going to be
about 500 quid. It wasn't, I paid nearly the same price (£137) last year but the cover wasn't as
detailed as this years is for the same cost. But it was still a comprehensive policy last year only with Swinton,
last years never had the RAC membership, leathers and lid cover, legal cover, riding overseas or
the riding other bikes cover. I bagged much better VFM this year I think. I'd imagine it would be peanuts insuring a 125.

Dont buy Chinese. They are cheap for a reason and that reason is simple. They are shit.

Buy one new it will work. When it starts to go tits up you will get shafted at dealers. you will find it hard to get after market parts. You will find it hard getting serious help. If you have a budget and its low get a 2nd hand Jap bike. When it comes to selling you will probably get your money back what will never happen with your cheap Chinese bike.

Yup. Sinnis and Lexmoto just sell rebadged Chinese vehicles from a variety of manufacturers. They both claim that they check out the factories and the quality control and only sell the best (rather than the cheapest) vehicles.

It's really up to you whether to believe that. Lexmoto started out as LLexeter aka www.cmpo.co.uk selling parts for other people's imported bikes, so they should have a fair idea of what's likely to go wrong.

Under the plastic all the Chinese 4 stroke scoots are just based on the same old GY6 design. In simple terms they are all the same scooter with either a 10 or 12 inch wheel and a 50 or 125 cylinder. The only variation that matters is manufacturer (quality or lack of).

Baotian Monza is the best build quality I've seen of the Chinese scoots. Compared to my Qinqi made Peugeot it's like comparing a Rolex to a Sundial carved by an autistic paraplegic.
