So I had my first off. Locked the front wheel on damp roadwork Tarmac and fell off. Gonna call insurance in the morning. The lower casing is scuffed right through so there's a hole in it. Guy from the council had to come and put sand over the oil that was everywhere. My bike was worth about £2k before the accident. Is it probably a write-off?

Damn it been here too long was expecting more serious abuse.... Razz

Sorry to hear about your incident mate, sounds like you're ok except dented pride and wallet.

meh bugger insurance what kind of bike is it? sound like a job for fairings from ebay and a check over by a pro that you haven't cracked or bent anything of importance? Smile

Trackbike? unless said bike is maybe no of that ilk.

I tend to talk random nonsense, should not be taken as expert as I am a noob. Sensible options will be here later.

Not going to fix that with fairings and gaffa tape.

Was it? Got details?

What's the excess on your insurance? You may be able to fix the bike yourself for less.

Did you get the engine shut off before the oil escaped?

DON'T DO IT! YOU HAVE SO MUCH TO LIVE FOR!

Being a new rider & making a claim will screw you over so much in the long run.
If you thought getting insured on a 125 was pricey, imagine the cost of insuring a larger capacity bike when you pass your test & you declare the previous claim.
If the damage is purely cosmetic, I would work away at it yourself to clean it up. If you're having actual engine / running issue, take it to your local garage to deal with.
All of the above will be cheaper than declaring it to your insurance.
Unless the tarmac jumped out at you & you have a witness Thumbs Up

This forum is full of threads on how to repair & restore your bike after a crash (amongst other things) so grab a cupa and have a read.
Wouldn't hurt to take some photos of the damage and make another thread in the workshop section so you can get some advise on how best to repair the damage.

Don't be disheartened, learn from it and keep on riding

Isn't that something you could replace yourself by undoing three or four screws?
You might find a secondhand bit for peanuts if it's a popular mode, in any case a new part might be less than the excess you'll have to pay anyway.

His engine casing is worn through. Oil is leaking out.

We don't know which side or where.

I believe it's an ER6.

I'm not quite sure what you mean, can you explain in more detail?

Thanks for all your replies. Just to clear up: it's an ER6F. The fairings are pretty much untouched thanks to the crash mushrooms but the lower metal casing (the round bit - engine/gearbox?) has scraped right through which is why ALL of the oil in the bike has come out. I didn't have time to hit the killswitch but it stalled pretty soon after it went over. The gear lever is bent in, the mirror is bent and the clutch lever is loose.

On the plus side, I have 3 weeks off work with a broken wrist!

If you go through insurance, you will be paying silly money for insurance for many years to come.

Replacing engine cover is easy - some used undamaged engine cover off ebay, gasket and some engine silicone sealant in places.

Ok. So I spoke to my friendly local garage and they can fix it all for £250. I've cancelled the claim. Thanks for your advice everyone.

I wish I had known this before getting all the extras at bennet to ensure my second hand CBF125.

I dragged my FZ750 out of the middle lane of the M5 and then rode it the 80 miles home rather than deal with the inevitable insurance arse-rape.

Wait for the bill for elebenty million ponds from the council for "road repairs".

You have informed your insurance which is good so if such a bill appears, you can decide if it's something you want to/can pay.

Doesn't always happen. It did happen to a mate of mine who lost control on a corner and rolled his car. He got a bill from the council about 6 months later for cleaning diesel off the road... interesting in itself since he had a petrol car, putting a whole new angle onto the likely reason for the accident.
