first you need a set of feeler guages. screwfix or toolstation have them for around £5
you'll also need a spark plug spanner.
some ring spanners.
and download the manual from here
to do the job.
1, remove spark plug and put bike on center stand (if fitted)
2. remove the 2 round plugs at the top of the engine, (you'll see the rocker arms and tappets inside)
3. pop it in 3rd or 4th gear and rotate the rear wheel. you'll see the rocker arm push down on the valve via the tappet. keep roatating the wheel until the valve goes down and back up again, and a wee bit more. there shouldnt be any weight from the cam to the rocker arm now,
4 loosen the lock nut on the tappet, and loosen the tappet off a wee bit,
5. with the feeler guage choose one (0.1mm for the intake (carrb side of engine) or (0.13 for the exhaust side of the engine) it might need 2 feeler guages to make up the number.
6 slide the selected feeler thickness between the tappet and the top of the valve.
7. wind in the tappet until its tight on the feeler guage, but not so tight it can't move. the guage should be able to move but be rubbing on the valve and tappet,
8 with the set, hold the tappet with a flat bladed screwdriver so it doesnt move when you tighten up the lock nut.
9 nip up the lock nut and check that the feeler can move but isnt too loose.
repeat from step 3. on the other valve.
job done.
put the caps back on and plug back in, and put it back in neutral.
you can also use the timing marks on the fly wheel to get it to get to the correct place, but i dont bother, up to you.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2006Q8dMNdw is a video on the gs which also has the same motor as yours.
