Hello everyone,

I recently purchased my first "big" bike, a Honda CB400 Superfour 93, after passing my mod1 and mod2 tests to gain an A2 license.

Yesterday I did some maintenance and removed fuel tank in the process, I ran the bike out of juice before removing the tank, this is where all my problems have started.

Today when riding the bike started up but it wasn't idling correctly and while taking it for a ride it cut out on me Sad .

I've fiddled with the idle screw to get it to idle correctly however it doesn't seem to have made a difference.

Thanks Vincent. I did remove the fuel tank yesterday and before removing the fuel tank to do some maintenance I switched the petcock to the off position and run it out of juice so I didn't have petrol going everywhere after removing the tank, this is where all my problems started.

do you think you have sucked crap in the carb by letting it use all the fuel in the tank?

whip the carb(s) off an give em a quick clean

These have carb drain screws do they not?

As per Mudcow suggestion - you've probably drawn crap into the carbs or the pipes that feed them.

Not a problem for the carbs. However, I'd strongly suspect that you've sucked crap from the bottom of the tank either when running it dry or after disturbing it, and clogged one or more jets.

You could try various degrees of non-invasive fixing but it'll probably be quicker in the long run if you just whip them out and clean the jets properly.

In addition, have a look in the tank and see if it's rusting, clean it out thoroughly and fit a filter in the fuel line.

Thanks for your help all, I've decided that I'm going to get the carbs off and give them a clean as suggested

Yes definitely the right screw - sorry what I said wasn't worded correctly, my mistake. What I meant was that the idle screw does make a difference to the idle speed but the bike still doesn't idle correctly, the idle speeds keeps varying in rpm and doesn't sound "right".
