12s are always a bit of a pain to get on a freewheel (I think it's partly to do with the physical size needed for bearings/pawls in there). Changing to a cassette system would let you go down to 11 and give you a greater choice of bits, but it's quite an expensive upgrade and 7 speed cassettes are becoming rarer too. On my old bike (which started life as friction shifted 10 speed - i.e. 5 on the back) I ended up going to 9 speed so I could fit reasonable components. That does become expensive though, as you need new shifters and possibly new mechs.
I'd be tempted to go for 13/28, and if that's not enough then up the teeth on the large chainring. You could always just practice spinning and up your cadence, which is free  |
