I'm hiring yet another van tomorrow. Do I just need my plastic bit then? How will they know I've got no points since I last had the van (5 days ago!)? More to the point, and not wanting to appear tight, but will I end up stumping up more for whatever check they need to do to prove I'm still licenced then?

There was a man on the news representing the van/car hire companies who told us we may now be asked to print off the online page with a code on it to present when we arrive.

So DVLA have got rid of a paper form, which will now require printing of paper each time we hire a van? Another electronic resource for DVLA to balls up while we still post V5s off.

This seems to have been quietly ushered in. Were I not to have read this thread I'd be non the wiser. What'd happen if I hadn't, and turned up tomorrow clutching bits of card AND plastic? What happens when I need a van as last time and it was spur of the moment, and I couldn't get to a computer and printer?

I've just spoke to the hire company by phone. As I'm a semi-regular punter at present (unfortunately), I 'just need to bring myself', as my details are still on file. If I was to put it in my mates name, as a new customer he'd need exactly the same as I did on my first hire, namely both parts of my licence and a credit / debit card in his name. Fair enough, thats more than reasonable.

It's already a cock up! I'm also hiring a van tomorrow...

So went to the site to get my code and despite entering details 100% correctly I get the following message:

"It has not been possible to display/match your driving licence.
For further information regarding your driving licence details contact DVLA by telephone
0300 083 0013
Monday to Friday 8.00am to 7.00pm
Saturday 8.00am to 2.00pm"

So I phoned the number, guess what? Yep a recorded message stating that the phonelines are down for planned maintenance until 9:30 this evening, a superb service once again from the DVLA... guess it's lucky I didn't destroy my paper counterpart then

Seriously today on BCF is the first place & time I've heard about it. Considering that this is supposed to save millions surely it wouldn't have broken the bank for them to write to licence holders and tell them they're completely chaning the way their system works?
