Now the summer's here and I have re-discovered my joy of pushbikes again I was thinking about cycling in to work on the occasional Saturday morning, because it's quieter. Works about 10-15 miles away, I think it should take me roughly 45 minutes to an hour get there. I start at half eight and finish at half twelve

The question is would you avoid main roads or not? The problem is, I can go down the A429 which practically takes me most of the way there, I'd then join up with my other route and do the last 3 miles or so down country roads, there but it's a fast road but wide so cars should pass easily enough. The other route would be my usual route, on the 250, which is about 8 miles down a B road, it's not really skinny but there are quite a few corners, with not many safe passing places, if I came up behind a cyclist in my car, it would take a while before you could safely pass, and once I was behind a pedalist for 5 miles when a lorry just couldn't get past.

Which would you say would be the safest route? The B road is very quite when I go in on a Saturday morning and still quiet at lunch time on the way back but very busy during the week, which is why i'm not brave enough to go in the week.

Thanks!

Hinges on the speed limit and your own pace imo.

I routinely cycle along a major NSL route which I can hold a steady 20-30mph along and frankly it's no bother at all. However some other NSL climbs I've done where I might only be managing 10mph aren't so pleasant.

I'd guess I could maintain about 20-25mph, I'm not sure as I've not rode for a while now, I live in lovely flat Warwickshire, there's only one hill which I have to go up on either route anyway and I can't see it slowing me down too much.

The roads are 50's all the way but most do 70. I think I'll take the main roads if I do do it. I just wondered if the country route would be more interesting, but then realised I'd be going so slow that the corners don't even matter. Laughing
