most other bikes are miles better than the old er6 youre training on.
apparently the nc is a bit boring, the mt 09 is nice to ride. ____________________ GOOD GAME BODYGUARD: https://i.imgur.com/8WePGgf.jpg

I have a lovely little CBF125 that I love even though I am a bit fed up of the lack of power and having to abort overtaking because the poor beggar just cant.
Today while i was driving on the motorway I saw a happy bike overtaking us on the motorway (the lady driving and of course not leaving the middle lane for the whole trip). I noticed it was an NC, and It looks nicer on the road that on the photos.
I have no idea of bikes but, is not the NC750 a bit underpowered? With good torque but not high revs it must feel a bit like a diesel bike.
I am learning with a oldish ER6n and I already know what it feels overtaking on a dual lane road, just twist and rev the thing from 3k to whatever is needed suddenly you are grinning while trying to get the bike back to the legal 70 MPH.
I dont want to miss that with my first bike.
And yeah the MT 07 is an option but I have a feeling the NC750 is a better bike for someone that wants to ride a lot. THe Mt07 kinda looks like a summer treat. |
The NC is, more than likely, not the bike you are looking for. I use my 700 to commute because that's its primary purpose and it does it well - the frunk / front boot thing is useful. The redline is 6.5k and unless you plan you'll still have overtaking issues, though not quite as bad as your cbf. The NC will do 115 even with 100kg of lard sitting on it, but it doesn't get there particularly quickly - the 750 apparently improves on the 700 but in reality it's still going to turn out in a very similar way. Very low COG hides 218kg well when on the move. Mine fulfils a specific need, I could do my commute on a 125 but, like you, it just doesn't quite have enough to do the job with some headroom on the roads I use (and also "fat bloke on tiny bike"). The NC does, returns 75mpg and only costs me £99 for fully comp insurance.
I guarantee you'll be disappointed with the NC if you are looking for a little rocket. ____________________ Honda CBF125 ➝ NC700X

I had an NC700S for two and half years and 35,000 miles (here it is, for sale at the dealer where I part-ex'd it). It was rock-solid reliable, other than going through three chains/sprockets sets in that period. (I think the torquey parallel twin is murder on an already under spec'd chain, or I was just bad at chain maintenance.) It was a great first big bike for me, especially since I mostly used it to commute in central London. My wife and I even used it for several 1,000+ mile tours.
But I agree with the above. It will be boring after a while.
I now have a 100+bhp, revvy VFR, where you can hear the petrol being slurped every time I twist the throttle, but it's definitely not boring. It would not have been a good first bike. ____________________ Current: '14 VFR800X Test passed 31/10/12.

See I think that the NC could be exciting for the practically minded, but Honda stopped short of making it as boring as they could’ve done. Yes the MPG is in the bag. That’s a big win. And the frunk (I like that word, ScaredyCat) is neat for helmet/beer storage….
…but where’s the weather protection? A mere wisp of a fairing and sit the rider up high in the wind. What’s that all about? Oh, and nice wide bars to feck up your filtering.
I had the old 700S on loan for a couple of days while the CBF1000 was having a big service, and found I was hitting the rev limiter in every gear and I’m not riding an especially revvy bike. My old CB500, which I’ve been using for the last week, is much more exciting that the NC.
So yes the NC range is a bit boring, but has its benefits…
HOWEVER… I am very much in favour of a stepped approach to bike experience. Coming from a 125 to a MT-07 or CBF1000 is, in my opinion, a jump that misses out on some cracking “lesser” bikes. Yeah, if you’re careful you’ll have no worries jumping straight to a high performance machine, but who wants to be careful? There’s a lot to be said for ringing every last ounce of performance from your current bike before moving on. My first big bike back in the early nineties was an air-cooled Diversion 600. Felt like a rocket ship after a learner bike, but in reality was slower than my brother’s CB500 (I know, we raced… on private roads of course). But that just meant that my next bike felt better, faster. I’m really glad that manufacturers like Yamaha are bringing in stuff like this R3. Small capacity race reps that actually have a bit of character and performance have been missing for too long. I can really imagine hammering round the lanes near me on one of those with a massive grin, and my license, and my life. ____________________ 2007 CBF1000 & 2016 CBF1000F - Commuter heaven | 1994 CBR600FR - Awaiting defibrillation |

Actually the R3 seems to be receiving universally positive reviews. Yes it may be heavier and less powerful than the old 2 smokes, but I bet it’s got a better frame, suspension and brakes. It also seems to evoke misty eyed reminiscence for the good old days when you didn't have 200 traction controlled horse on tap.
Yes you can buy bigger stuff cheaper. When I bought my FireBlade it was only 4 years old, but only cost £2800. It was easily the best value bike in the showroom, but completely inappropriate for the 15 minute commute I was doing at that time.
I hope that Yamaha sell loads of the things. Then in a couple of years they’ll start turning up second hand for good money. ____________________ 2007 CBF1000 & 2016 CBF1000F - Commuter heaven | 1994 CBR600FR - Awaiting defibrillation |
