I'm looking at getting a GSX-R 1000 but I'm wondering if it's worth waiting to see what Suzuki are going to do next year. Most of the other big jap bikes have had major overhauls in recent years leaving Suzuki behind.

I'm not in a rush to be buying right now so I guess I can wait, but I wondered if anyone had read or heard anything about possible updates for the gixxer?

Not sure how reliable Visor Down are, but they think that Suzuki may not be updating any of their GSXR's until 2017.

I'd say the 2017 estimate is safe, given that they're advertising hell out of doing 0% finance on the GSXR range now. They'll be wanting to profit from the low production cost like they've been doing with the SV 650 for years now.

Well that is slightly frustrating. I dropped in to a dealer earlier hoping for a test ride and he reckons I will have a hard time finding one as Suzuki only provide demo bikes for their new range, of which the gixxer is not.

He was not exactly helpful though, so I'm not entirely sure how of that is true.

Has the Gixxer moved on much since the K5? It certainly looks the same. The Blade is basically 7 years old and both are getting a bit long in the tooth, but the Blade seems as popular as ever. The Gixxer less so.

I think the only updates will be the new moto gp colour scheme this year and a new model in 2017 to celebrate winning the 2016 motogp crown Very Happy

I know the K5 is the long standing icon of the gixxers. But honestly, what would I benefit from it over a newer addition? I take trips to the Nurburgring, and I would like to do a few sessions at Brands, but I'm no racer by a long shot. So I don't feel like I would gain anything from the K5 over a L5 for example.

You'd gain a significant saving. The money alone would make me buy the K5 / K6. You pay more for less bike.

Why buy a 1000cc sportsbike then? If you're no racer, why does it matter that the GSXR doesn't have 200bhp?

I don't get that attitude, it's not for the 'average rider' it's a top-end sports bike. You either want a top end sports bike or you don't, and any features you want to discuss between them will all be performance-orientated.

I probably don't explain myself very well. What I meant was that if the differences between the two models are only minute enough for professional racers to benefit from, then why does it matter to Joe public? Or are they noticeable to Joe public, and if so what are they?

I want a top end sports bike. Specifically the gixxer. Paddy suggested the K5 over the current model, and all I asked was why (other than financial reasons), specifically.

I don't understand how my question can be so confusing.

I had the same discussion last week; someone asked me why the K5 is the ultimate gixxer and I couldn't answer. So as it comes up here, I too am asking why.

Because Joe public likes the 'status' a specific model attracts. Because publications who's life blood is discussing the differences between models

Why are you stuck on the GSXR? As above, it hasn't massively progressed over the years, where the Yamaha and Kawasaki have along with the BMW. I'd be going for one of those three if I wanted a new litre bike and had the cash to throw away on one.
(I'd have to be happy to throw away a lot of cash, because that'd be what I was doing.)

I took my k6 (600 though) to Germany, round the Nurburgring and I'm going to do Snetterton plus Brands in the next few months. It felt comfy enough to do the miles to get me there without feeling too uncomfortable, the engine was sweet as and it handled everything I threw at it with ease. The thou would only be better. The shape of the k6 versus l5 is no competition really. The low level exhaust is definitely superior to the whale cock they stick on the newer ones. It's less fussy and gets the job done. Thumbs Up

If I ever chop mine in it would be for the thou. Love 'em.

TLDR: If you prefer a shiny new bike to a much older K5, get one, it will be fast enough.

Genuinely trying to be helpful, why? You haven't ridden one because Suzuki apparently aren't in the business of selling them, so what's made it your top choice over the many other bikes in that category?

I'm really not trying to troll, but I see groups of Gixxers go by and people asking which Gixxer to get and I wonder what it is about that brand that gets it a free pass when the rest of Suzuki's range gets rightly slated for being old designs.

The losing horsepower thing is Top Gear nonsense. If it HAS lost any power, then a good service will bring it all back, and perhaps a bit more than new on a good engine.

I saw an L0 (2010) for sale last night for £5500. That's not a lot of money for a ridiculous sportsbike that you can't really exploit on the road. So why wait for a new one? If you want the latest and greatest, buy an S1000RR or an R1. If you want a decent bike for a decent price, a 5 or 10 year old GSXR will still blow away anything else performance wise. I doubt if you encountered a 2015 GSXR on the road you'd notice a difference to be honest, because since the early 2000s sportsbike performance has been so great that only someone as talented as John McGuiness could exploit it all. Plus I'm sure you'll see many fast group track day riders on older machines who overtake people on brand new machines.

You could also look at the TT Superstock times to get more info. The current Fireblade only makes 180bhp ish. The current ZX10 is closer to 200bhp (I think about 195bhp from memory). Hutchy won the Superstock on a ZX10 with a time of 1hr 10 mins and 5 seconds. John McGuinness did it on a blade with a time of 1hr 11 minutes and 35 seconds. The performance is so close, and the talent differential between a top level TT racer and a normal road rider is so great, that any 1000cc sportsbike from the last 15 years will be plenty fast enough. Anything else is just pub bragging rights.

I must say I like the new Moto gp paint scheme on the gsxr's. Second best paint scheme I've seen on them in my opinion - the first being the subtlness of the orange and black.

On the BHP note, I for instance took my 1998 vtr1000 to the dyno when i bought it 3 years ago (2012) and with 55000 miles and smoking like a chimney on the overrun it still managed 102BHP on his dyno. (still more than standard??)

Also I see the 1000vs600cc arguement alot, and think anyone who says a 1000cc over a 600 will make them a faster rider on the road is dreaming, there are other reasons, I bought mine due to ease of riding, being able to potter around at 3k in town and still crack it open and have some pull. Laughing

Being honest I think my 1198 is too much for the road. A 848 would, real world, be as quick if not quicker. However I knew if I got the 848 I'd always think I should have got the one I wanted, and in vindication even three years later I feel no need to change.
Willy waving? Yep, probably. Do I regret it? Nope!
