So, selling a motorbike and have been contacted by a guy living on the IOM. He wants to send a courier to come collect it.

What do i do with the V5? I know they run a different system over their, so won't it have to be imported?

If it works the same way but, vise versa, if you know what I mean. You'll just have to inform the relevant UK department that the bike is being exported and fill in the relevant documentation stating such.

AFAIK the person who buys it in the IoM will then have to register the bike over there and yes, there is no V5 on the IoM but, they do have something similar but, I can't recall off hand what it's called. I can dig mine out tomorrow if you like and let you know. As I said though, that should be the importers responsibility.

It is relatively straightforward allegedly and folks do it all the time.

Usually there would be the hassle of taxes to deal with, if I recall correctly, as the IoM is outside of the EU. However, the Manx and UK governments have a reciprocal agreement over the import/export of vehicles.

IoM Government website says:

Quote:
Previously registered vehicles
If the vehicle has been previously registered in the UK or Northern Ireland either an Export Certificate from the country of registration or the V5 Registration Certificate must be produced. Vehicles previously registered in any other country, must complete a Customs and Excise declaration before registration.
If the vehicle was previously registered in the UK you must obtain the complete V5C document to register the vehicle in the Isle of Man. It is not possible to register the vehicle with the tear-off section only, as this is only to be used for notifying change of owner in the UK. If the complete Registration Certificate is not available, registration of the vehicle is likely to be delayed by several weeks until an Export Certificate is obtained from the DVLA

I've contacted ads regarding buying some birds. The ad says they're in my area, West Yorkshire but the same response comes back.

I am in IoM and I would love for you to come see them but I understand it is a long way. I have attached these pictures blah blah, you pay the fee to cover the courier, then when they arrive you can send me the final balance .... blah blah blah.

Be wary of the method of payment. Unless that cash is in your hand or the money is in the bank, don't release the bike.

Buying or selling an item to or from someone in the IoM shouldn't pose anymore risks than doing so within the UK, as long as you take the obvious sensible precautions, as in getting your money before parting with goods.

Scammers are getting more clever all the time.

Tell them to send you a photo of them standing at the top of the Laxey Wheel and holding a tin of Birds Custard Smile

Agreed. Thumbs Up

I was just sharing my experience with electronic communications with purchases from people in (read Nigeria) in IoM.

Edited to add:

I heard IoM is a pikey colony, that's true isn't it?

True but selling a bike to someone in the IoM, via a courier, shouldn't pose any less risk than selling a bike to a guy who is currently working off-shore in the North Sea.

AFAIK, after the TT fnishes the IOM population drops to about 6 people. Should be easy enough to ask for a bit of info and find out if the guy is genuine.

Dave is probably related to him...

I'm not actually Manx. However, I do hold a Manx passport and spent around 14 years there.

The Manx are a very nice and friendly folk though. When I first arrived on the Isle I got chatting to one of the locals, who introduced me to his wife and his sister. There was only one person standing there. Shocked

Dance!

Just me but I wouldn't sell a bike via courier, I'd be patient and wait for other, hopefully more local interest.
