I don't find chains/locks make much difference in price.

As such, I never list any of them.

I'd be interested to know what the T&C's of listed security on a policy are, is it possible that if the listed security wasn't on the bike it at the time it was stolen would a payout not be made?

Or if only one of multiple security methods where applied not all (ie; a disc lock but not the chain lock).

My opinion is that even the monkey's you end up speaking to on the phone don't have a clue, and any discount you could of had is absorbed by the admin fee.

Play around with your quotes, word the name of your profession, job title or field of work differently.. change the amount of annual miles etc.

On the subject of mileage, for me personally changing the yearly amount from 3000-4000 has no difference in price to 7000-8000 (on a new quote), might go crazy next year Rolling Eyes

On the subject of annoying calls, could you just not invest in a £1 sim card and list that number until you wanted to take the policy out?

I've never listed any security on insurance, usually only made a couple of quids difference and it just gives them more wiggle room if its stolen with no lock on it.

Insurance renewal aarrgh, I hate the run around I get when checking the details of offers.

Last cover I was about to take out the insurer stipulated that if bike was stolen from driveway or within 500 metres of my house then I would not be covered.

I had initially stated that bike would be garaged (and it really would have been).

So I asked where I stood if for example bike is stolen from driveway if I happened to go into the house for lunch when washing bike and leaving it unattended to dry off ?

"Not covered for theft".

So I asked "what if I say I will keep my bike in the driveway ?",
answer was that I would be covered for theft and no restrictions re theft and distance from house!!

So I says OK, I will keep the bike on the driveway, premium for that please ?

Premium was £30 odd quid less than if I said it was garaged, and just to to clarify - there was no penalty if I decided to lock it up in the garage, go figure.

Not me..

I'd be wrapping it around the bike a few more times so that it's not resting on the floor though.

yeh if you say "yes I have security X" because you think the insurance may be cheaper, it just means if nicked and the security wasn't on it, no payout.

if you play about with the comparison sites I think you'll find it makes little difference not saying you have security. Of course any sensible person will use it.

An unscrupulous person could say it was an Almax security chain and that it was stolen along with the bike.

But nobody would fib on insurance details, would they Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

InB4 "only if it's a condition precedent to liability". Dance!

Once again with feeling:

When I added an Almax Series IV and Squire lock (best you're going to get) to a quote for my BMW to see what effect it would have, the lowest quote went up by 1/3rd.

Up.

Don't ass-u-me anything about insurance.

I think it may be less insurers quote. I noticed a while ago a lot insurers sites didn't list almax under the security options.

I declared nothing this time, convinced by something I think Roger wrote a while back. Coverage only cost me 48p extra with nothing declared and now I don't need to worry about forgetting to use the chain.

I got a fiver knocked off for putting my Almax chain on there but, as someone pointed out, it is an excuse for them not to pay out when i dont use it because i only use it at home. I left it off my renewal.

insurance is a complete joke.

Few years ago i was quoted less for keeping bike on the street rather than garaged..go figure.

on a side note, when my bike was stolen they didnt ask anything about security at all. Fair enough it was lifted into a van so chains and such wouldnt really have mattered (no floor anchor back then), but they literally never even asked about it.

Got a full payment out too for value of bike too, think that was hastings, would recommend them actually.

I bought an Abus disclock years ago, which siezed up and failed after about a years' use (out of warranty anyway). I still quote this on Insurance, as if the bike is nicked I have proof of purchase and the spare key. However, I think there is a clause in the cover that says if it isn't secured to an immovable object then it ain't covered.

That said, I have never thought to run a quote with and without the lock, so I shall in future.

Re: the increased premiums - it wouldn't surprise me if the underwriters worked it out on this basis: person who uses massive substantial lock and chain has had bike(s) nicked before, so is therefore more of a risk.

I agree.

My bikes are all insured as parked in street at night, with no security. The reality is that mostly they are locked up to ground anchors under security lights on private property. There is not a whole lot of difference between the two prices I'd be quoted. And I don't want them quibbling about the exact quality of the security if there is a claim.

Mind you, wouldn't put it past them to try and wriggle out of paying out anyway. Rolling Eyes

A few quid extra for full comp and another few quid for no-claims protection.

I use a Pragmasis beast and a resin bonded anchor in the garage at home but don't bother declaring it. Why? You just know that it'll get nicked the one time I'm cleaning the bike and whip indoors to pinch off an urgent barry.

That one I think I can explain (-ish, although garaged sinks this rationalisation too).

You're not going to start a modern car with a screwdriver. If you want the car, you have to get the keys.

If a car is on the street, it's less obvious which house you need to burgle.

"All well and good," I hear you say, "but bikes aren't cars."

Indeed, but the same underwriters cover both and could just be using the same software rather than spending more on doing it right.

Alternatively, potato.

Changing from 6k pa to 16k pa estimated mileage saved me 35% go figure also removing from keeping in a locked garage was the same price without the hassle of having to have it locked away if at home between 20:00 and 06:00
