Hornet vs VFR VTEC

Hi

I was looking to sell my Hornet but have been offered a swap on VFR..

Quite excited as I always liked them and was either going to buy one or a CBR.

Only doubt i have is the 46000 mileage on it. It look like it has been well looked after and I am thinking sport tourer should go for up to 100k

The bikes are about worth the same and i think as long as everything dont need replacing in a year I will be very happy.

Does anybody have adviced I on this that would help me

Isn't that the time when it's due valve clearances which cost £1600 or something?

I thought that initially but have read most people dont bother with it and they rarely need adjusting.
My bike needed one at 17000 and I was advised not to bother and have had no problems

In my experience, swaps are always bad news. The guy obviously feels he is getting a better deal if he suggested it.

You may get the buyers remorse and somehow it will feel worse than if you had just bought a shit-heap outright.

I swapped an RF900 for a Firestorm and it took me a while to get over that loss lol.

i've never been a fan of swaps, as Paddy says someone always loses. Sell, then with money in hand you'll get a good deal on something

VTEC needs doing every 16k. The majority of us are of the opinion 'if it isn't giving you reason to worry don't bother till next time'. Mine is at nearly 20k and I haven't done the valves and don't have any reason to believe they need doing. If you do enough research you'll come back with the same recurring tale of most Honda motor menders saying that 9 out of 10 VTECs that come in don't ever need adjusting.

The job costs around 5-600 quid from Honda but an indy can do them for half that so long as they have the relevant 'special' bucket lifter tools.

A well looked after VFR will go happily to 100k, some even to 150k.

I dunno, maybe I just believe everything I read but all the squires on the VFR owners groups that fire up pictures of their taco with the words 'still going strong' has to be worth a toss?

And don't go asking me to trawl around hauling links up, life's too short for that shit and we're all grown up.

I would not swap my 65k VTEC for a brand new Hornet, if it meant I had to ride the Hornet in the same way I ride my VFR: sport touring including 1000+ motorway miles to get to a destination, and the same back again.

(Of course, I could sell the Hornet and buy my VFR back and have lots of money to spend having fun. But that's not my point.)

I've put 20k on my VFR since I bought it in March 2013, and I'm about to go probably to Spain on it tomorrow. The engine is the least of what I'm concerned about. The electrics are another story.

Hornet is a city bike, commuting etc. VFR is a poor choice for commuting unless it's mostly motorway.

The bloke seems really genuine and is a bit reluctant to swap as he had his bike up for £2800 with no takers and mine was sold for £2k before he contacted me.

His choices are loose a chunk in a PX with a garage or lower his price take out Ebay fees and he will end up with about £2K.

He had a Hornet and liked touring so bought a VFR toured all over Europe now wants to go back to just commuting and remembes how much he loved tbe Hornet. Which is exactly the situation I am in now and I hope to do Spain next year.

When I first bought a bike everywhere I read valve checks tyre pressures chain tension lube chain blah blah and I did not leave my bike alone. Most of it was over kill IMO, A car mechanic told me he had rode Hondas all his life and never checked the valves and the engine will start to rattle if they did need doing I do not treat my cars like that and have had no problems and now just give my bike a quick once over now and again but do think regular oil changes are important.

I have txt him for some more info and he is going to check for me

I think you can tell alot from the person your getting the bike off as to what the bike is like, I just hope I not on here in 6 weeks saying they were right poor choice 😢😢😢

Never believe the honest bloke stuff. People will turn into your best mate in the world when they want something off you.

Find someone who knows about bikes to give it a good look other or possibly take it to a trusted mechanic to look it over.

The bloke started changing the deal until there was nothing left in it for me and that is without knowing if anything was wrong with his bike like the valves etc
