Licencing: Age related A?

So my older brother has gone and got himself a scooter. It's a 330 cc X10 bit I'm a little concerned because he thinks he has an age related A license. Was there ever a time when passing your car test gave you a motorcycle license? I think he passed his car test in 1983.

I dont think he's entitled to ride over 125 unless he passed the full motorcyle test/s however long ago.
Its kind of confusing though
Just looked at both mine and my lads (provisional) license
His provisional is green obviously but has dates in the A section
on the back like mine but mine has a < just before the first date
(to show when it was granted ?)
On the front his has AM/A/B/f/g to q
while mine has AM/A/B1/B/C1/D1/BE/C1E/D1E and so on.

As mentioned, I believe his license allowing him to ride mopeds no larger than 50cc.

Ok,

looks like he's convinced he's made a mistake. He said he'd checked https://www.viewdrivingrecord.service.gov.uk/driving-record/licence-number and it shows category:

A listed, no codes or restrictions listed on site - they do appear on plastic card though.

but, for example,

C1E has "Restrictions apply" and then lists the restriction codes that apply on the site, these also appear on his plastic license card.

He's going to get his training sorted before doing any riding anyway, so hopefully all is not lost.

Where does the "A" appear on their website? Vehicles you can drive, or Vehicles you can provisionally drive?
I can provisionally drive a tracked vehicle, don't think plod would be too impressed if they stopped me in 50 ton battle tank.

Have a look at any new car license it does appear you can ride bikes.

I have met so many people who think they have a full bike licence according to their plastic one. The DVLA are just not helping anyone with all of these confusing codes! why can't they just use a pic of the vehicle with a date and a tick....simples!

If it has dates in the A category all it means is he has a provisional entitlement and able to ride on L plates accompanied by a DAS qualified instructor. You will find that the date that expires is the same date his licence expires.

The DVSA have really confused i̶d̶i̶o̶t̶s̶ people with the new printing on the licences.

Arr There is some truth in what you are saying. Now if you passed your car test in round about 1950. It would give you a bike licence, but only as a learner. As at that time there was no restriction on the cc size for a leaner. You could at that time after passing your car test. Go out and buy, a bike any size. Stick "L" plate's on it, and ride round to your heart's content.

The paper counterpart says nothing about entitlements
so it looks like you have to do it all online nowadays

Just a little update, I know how much you care ...

He put the scooter away and didn't ride it, then went and spoke to a training school. He's just sent me a message to say he's just passed his mod 1 and has his mod 2 on Friday.

He's actually doing it on a geared bike too.
