I'm looking for a way to block torrenting from my router. I've got someone staying with me for a few weeks and as the bill payer I'll be the one chased through the courts for anything they torrent. (I'm not interested in the likelihood of that happening).

I'm not against torrenting as long as it's done responsibly (through a VPN) in which case my 'blocking' won't stop it anyway.

You could always try that verbal communication thing and ask them not to Thumbs Up Most people I know don't know what torrents are and just watch tv shows/movies/porn through websites these days.

They're a teenager and teenagers; in my experience; tend to be a little short term in their thinking. They're expressed a desire to use bittorrent for illegal things.

If they torrent properly then it wouldn't effect them (or me) anyway.

You can block the sites, but if you get in front of the court, just because someone downloaded something via torrents, you'd be the first one in the whole EU. Wink

You'll say, that you did not do a thing, and it's up to them to prove that you did. So, in the end, no one ever prosecuted downloaders.

If you were the provider of the illegal software, or any other files, then you'd get prosecuted.

Downloading is not illegal. Sharing is illegal, and the current policy is a 'three strikes and you're out' rule for ISP's. However, I don't know anyone who has had one strike, let alone three...

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I had a letter once.

Downloaded an album. Forgot to stop it being shared; a letter appeared a few weeks later telling me how many kittens had died due to my Nazi ways.

I rolled my eyes and vowed to be more careful in the future. I think that was Tiscali.

If it's that big of a problem, don't give him/her internet access. Your gaff, your rules.

If you ave a router running DDWRT, I doubt you do hence you asking the question in the first place, you can try the p2p block.

On my Netgear router I can can throttle bandwidth to a device or IP. If you notice a sudden spike in traffic to his PC/laptop, throttle* him until he gives up.

*I mean to slow down his download speeds of course, not to beat him mercilessly.

This is the best answer. If you don't want them to torrent in your house, and they still do, then don't give them internet access. Simple.

then I sent all my traffic though a socks5 tunnel to a none(p2p)open port

Don't give them access is the only option you have

Block? No. Detect? Yes. Grab wireshark and monitor for the BitTorrent protocol being used. Warn them not to, then if you detect them doing it anyway, cut their access off completely.

More chance of being mauled to death by a tiger in the centre of London than being charged for torrenting.

Have you not got anything better to worry about in your life?
