Let's say someone offered to sell me a bike for a price so ridiculously low I'd be forced to accept it. In other words, they're practically giving the bike to me for nothing... Can I then ring up my insurance company and tell them that I no longer want my CBF125 to be covered, but instead I want my new (insert what I consider an upgrade here) to be insured?

Google search tells me yes, I can do this but I may have to pay more. My mind tell me that my insurer may have a different policy. Maybe I should read the T&C's... What does BCF tell me?

Completely depends on the underwriter.

When I was new to biking, they refused to change the bike for a reasonable fee, so was cheaper to take out another policy. This happened twice for me.

Whatever you do, do not say you have 'disposed' of your original bike, just say you are thinking about it.

Bakesbeans is right, twice it's happened to me and both occasions I ended up taking a new policy, once with the same and once elsewhere. I know people have had it where they only pay a £25 admin fee, but I've never been so lucky

Thanks. The reason why I thought of transferring the policy as opposed to taking a new one is because I was thinking of NCB.

Depends on underwriter as some only insure 125,s

Others just charge admin fees

Some will charge a fortune as it depends on the bike

I'm guessing a motocross style will cost more then the cbf as they get nicked more

Depends how long you are into your existing policy regarding the value to you of the NCB entitlement.

Doing the sums might persuade you to bite down on the pillow and accept whatever your present insurer decides to inflict upon you.

If you have an insurer who transfers your policy at a reasonable cost and maintains your NCB, let us know who they are.

Before you call your current insurer, go and get a new quote on the new bike. Negotiate knowing how much it'll cost you if they prove problematical.

i asked my current insurer (on the 125) about adding a new bike to it (when i get one)

I could either start another policy for a new bike seperate to the 125 policy - in which case you may as well start fresh with gocompare/compare the market whatever.

Or

Start a multi-bike policy which would mean terminating the 125 policy (and getting £19 back with 6 months still to go Rolling Eyes ) and starting a new multi-bike policy with the 2 bikes on it.

Both options came back with a quote massively over the top - compared to what gocomparethemeerkat were offering.

But - you can only use your no-claims once - so the NCD i've built up on the 125 can't be used again on the policy for any new bike as well.

This is typically for adding a new bike, it is a ridiculous rule that insurers have that NCD can only be applied to one vehicle at a time as your the same person.

In response to OP its as people have said before you should theoretically be able to but it may cost you, they will work out the rest of the policy on the new bike, if this is more to insure you will have to pay the difference however if it turns out its less on insurance you may end up paying less.

You will normally always pay an admin fee, depending on your questioning skills and ability to "moan" effectively this may be able to be removed. (Yes i managed to get a £50 admin fee removed)

If no-one was ever able to swap vehicles mid policy then it would mean a lot of cancellations when people sell their bikes/car.

As always best bet is to phone your insurer and ask them, don't say your doing it or have done it, just say you want a quote to see how much it would be if i......

Give you an example from after buying my ZX12R the other week.

New policy using 2 years NCB from a previous bike- £114

Cost to swap onto my current policy from FZ6 I just sold with 8 years NCB - £280

Ridiculousness.

Yes, but would you rather that the cartel dropped the scheme altogether?

It's only ridiculous if you don't understand why. The alternative is unpalatable to those who have just one vehicle

It's ridiculous to expect us to understand why if nobody ever takes the time to explain it. Crying or Very sad

Put simply - loss ratio is a product of claims incurred over premium collected. On a macro scale if you allow NCD twice or more then the level of premium collected decreases but the claims incurred stays the same. To counter that you'd need to increase the cost of all policies at the base line. Therefore, those with only one vehicle would suffer the most severely for the increase to which they'll see no benefit.

As opposed to those with multiple vehicles suffering now for no benefit.

Since multiple-vehicle owners axiomatically give you more custom per person, and - correct me if I'm wrong - multiple vehicle households are now the norm, it seems regressive to stick with a system tailed to benefit <forever-alone.gif> povs.

You're quite correct - hence multicar policies are becoming more and more available.

However those with multiple vehicles are already benefiting from the lower base and still have the opportunity to benefit from multiple NCD when they've earned it. It's not all bad news.

Besides - bike insurance being a couple of hundred quid on average it's hardly rocking people's lives

I hate finding threads on Google when a definitive answer isn't provided so this is for anyone who may be in a similar position to me.

I phoned up my insurance company today and I was told that I could change the bike on my policy from a CBF125 to a YZF-R125 at no extra cost to my premium. I'd only have to pay a £20 admin fee which I think is reasonable.

Correct info in = A better chance of a correct answer....

Your OP makes no mention of the bike you are looking to upgrade???? to.
Upgrade to most people would be a larger bike. Which as was pointed out. May not be possible as the underwriter only covers 125/L riders.

As well as you can say NO. No matter how good the offer is Thumbs Up
