To Windows 10 or not?

I recently received the Windows 10 upgrade app, through which I reserved a free copy of Windows 10 because, well, free stuff innit.

I am currently running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit on an old Dell Optiplex 760

- Intel Core 2 Duo E8400, 3 GHz
- Intel Q45 Express Chipset
- 128 GB SSD (OS and programs)
- 1TB HDD (file storage)
- 6 GB RAM
- DVD-ROM + DVD-RW

It doesn't have much software on it; nothing I can't find again. It connects by ethernet to the broadband router. I use it for casual browsing, e-mail, a bit of 'Word', some photographic manipulation and would like to do video editing at up to 1080p (I used to use Adobe Premiere Elements but lost this on an old PC and haven't got around to getting a new version).

The quick Win10 compatibility tester says everything is good to go. So, should I install it when it gets launched and downloaded?

I did sign up for 10 via the app. If it gets on my tits or fails miserably for me, then I'll reinstall 7.
I usually grump over change.

Windows 7 was the first legal version I ever owned. Me and the OH pre-ordered 2 copies before it was released (think it was being offered at half price too or something like that). Amazon sent us 2 each So we ebayed the surplus and ended up with free Windows anyway.

I will give it a go. Windows 7 is my first legit windows also. Was just an upgrade version, think I paid £30 for it, but extremely easy to do a fresh install just a registry tweak really. Surprised I was even offered a free upgrade to Windows 10 actually.

Install virtual box, then you can create a virtual Windows 10 and have a play with it.

Sticking with win7 because I don't need to upgrade. Only time I'll upgrade is when it becomes incompatible with programs I need to use. Not likely to happen any time soon. Also even if win7 is a resource hog, my rig has plenty of resources :')

I've been using 10 development and had 1 crash. It's been stable as fuck and will be moving up straight away after its released. Only fault is that I'm not 100% sold on the start bar.

I tried the W10 beta in January on my 8.1 laptop, no problems other than it refused to connect to wifi automatically from sleep.
This is annoying as you needed maybe three clicks then wait every time on and off through the day.
It doesn't go through your programs and block things you didn't pay for

If the install is still the same it was just like one big (2GB+) update.
I decided to revert to 8.1 after a couple of weeks - this was also surprisingly easy rather like a system restore.

It's more like Windows 8 than Windows 7.
I find 8.1 quite good once you make some changes so it bots into normal desktop rather than the tiled thing.
However the metro tiles are only a glorified start menu.
You can delete and resize the tiles and put things there you want from time to time like Control Panel.

I tried the beta and did see some mild performance increases, the whole layout will take time for people to get used to. All my work gear has been running windows 8 since it's beta, so the layout is more familiar to me now.

What I want to know is, If I upgrade to windows 10 from 7, what will happen when/if I reinstall windows.
Will I have a lifelong entitlement to a windows 10 install, or just the one after which I'll be stuck on windows 7.

i got win 8 on my new pc, lasted 1 day before it was wiped and back to 7, new laptop has 8.1 which is better, ive stuck with it, only because i can't fucken downgrade it, the loader on the hp is locked, friggin annoying,
it all works, but i dont like it, every thing is a mission to find, and i just have to use the search feature to find anything, where i know where every thing is in win7.

its a bit like the latest upgrade on my htc, everything was fine, an update came out, now ive got a 3 hour battery life.

i cant imagine 10 is going to be any better when they are clearly basing it on 8.

One the audio side of things win10 looks to have some interesting improvements and not just for developers. WDM drivers getting down to ASIO levels.
