Stoke to devon route options

Me and a friend have got travel down to Devon from Stoke on Trent next Saturday morning and coming back same evening so we have taken the opportunity to both get on our bikes and ride to and from. Now I've made the journey many of times in my van and it's boring (m6 j15to m5 j27) so was thinking set off earlier and get some good riding in,

I'm stumped down to Birmingham, I'm going go from Stoke through ecclesial and Shrewsbury and try the famous riding road in clee hill, then I'm stumped so m6/m5 is only options 😩 has anyone got any ideas after this route as I hate motorway driving, plus it squares my tyres! I'm on a yzf600r and my mate on fz1[list=][/list]

I would go via the A49 as far as Hereford and then A466 to Monmouth and onwards to Chepstow down the Wye Valley before heading across the 2nd Severn Crossing. I'm not sure where you'd go from there as I'm not too familiar with that area but it is a start and is fairly direct.

I would carry on south from Clee Hill via Breacon and then over the Severn Bridge, free on a bike too. Then South around Bristol via the Mendips.

Where in Devon are you going?

You could get back on M5 after the severn bridge then come off at M5 Jct 24 go via A39 to exmoor head towards Simonsbath and then tiverton heading into Devon, some great roads in that area?

I would go through Malvern and then take the Wytch Road to Western Malvern and aim for Ledbury and then the Forest of Dean cross the river at the second crossing and take the motorway through Bristol leave as soon as you clear the city and aim for Exmoor.

Any of the above are options are worth trying but why are you going from Stoke to Eccleshall- the middle of nowhere before Shrewsbury??. The A53 from Stoke - Market Drayton- Shrewsbury is the most direct and a much better biking road before you go down to Ludlow/Clee Hill.
Going to take you a fair while to get down to Devon and back non motorway why make it harder from the start.

clee hill to bewdley to kidderminster to Worcester(speed camera duel track) to gloucester to Bristol on the a38 would be my route but not sure after bristol

Best of luck for doing Stoke to Devon and back in a day without using the M5/6. That is going to be one long day, I hope you're on a comfy tourer!

I'm on a yzf600r thundercat (sofa seat) I know it's going be a long ride but I really hate the motorway

I keep thinking long days ride too if using A roads only
Motorways can be boring but If I wanted to go from Stoke to say Exeter and mix it up bit.

From Stoke I'd take the M6 south to J13 just south of Stafford ( abt 20 miles) then follow the A449 to Worcester.
Wolverhampton is the only large town to navigate through and not too bad.
At Worcester follow the A38S to the M4/M5 interchange just north of Bristol then
use the M5S to J23 just north of Bridgewater ( about 30 miles or so)
then back on the A38 again to Exeter
The A38 through Bristol is no fun.

As an example of timings
I rode from Bristol to just south of Stafford using the A38 A449
About 4 hours going up and less then 2 coming back via the motorway

Going sort a final route out tonight, we going take scenic route down (a-roads) as we haven't got get there until 3 then motorway back as it probably will be dark
