I was looking for a decent set a while ago but soon realised I wasn't prepared to pay the money and was better off buying individual bits as and when I needed them. I did buy a cheap set to clean up threads but when it comes to larger sizes and different pitches it soon becomes necessary to buy extra.

I have this place local to me and can pop in as and when I need to

See if there's a place near you.

If there's a place like that near you, make use of them. I just turned up with the bolt I wanted to fit into the knackered threads and it turned out to be a fine pitch thread. Without a pitch measurer thingy I would have just ordered a standard pitch tap and potentially caused more damage. The tap they sold me was pricey compared to the cheap sets, but it cut the new thread like it was going through butter.

Handles in cheap kits are always crap.

Cutting compounds are way better than oil, well that's what I find, each to their own.

Go to your local steel stockholders/ trade tool suppliers and buy them individually for sweeties.

I get mine from Thomas Grahams in Carlisle.

Make sure you have the exact size and types written down.

Unless you're lucky tap & die sets are a bit like tattoos.....cheap ones aren't good and good ones aren't cheap.
