I desperately need help and advise , I am at my wits end, recently my bike an 02 Honda varadero 125. cut out on me like it had been switched off, ive not been able to start it since, I have good spark, I have fuel getting through, it has good compression, the engine timing and valve clearances are fine. ive replaced the ecu, ive also replaced the the coils ht leads and plugs, ive even stuck another low mileage engine in but its doing the exact same thing. when I try to start it, it tries to run on one cylinder, the rear I think, but it wont kick in, then I get a backfire through the carb sometimes the exhaust aswell, what else could it be? I noticed the regulator rectifier has a green wire going to the ecu, an earth according to the manuel, could it be anything to do with that? I am desperate now.

Did you check fuel line? Did you use a multimeter and check earthing? Given you've changed practically all other suspects except the fuel system and wiring loom seems the fuel supply is worth a look.

yeah ive cleaned the carbs out, I will turn my attention to the loom next, its had me scratching my head for weeks, by all rights it should start but its having none of it, the way it tries to start sounds like a fuel problem but the way it cut out was like someone had hit the kill switch which suggests electrical,

Sounds like a stupid question but have you checked the kill switch?

lol, yes m8, it is something I would do aswell, it wouldn't of been the 1st time ive sat on my bike wondering why it isn't firing up then realising its off, luckily I had a spare switch gear from when I changed the wiring loom on it from an 02 to an 05 then realised afterwards the bloody switchgears were different, well the light switch was totally different but the kill switch and starter had a different plug on it, I had to bodge it to keep me on the rd for a few days until I got another, it will no doubt be something stupid once I find whats wrong with it lol.

Hi Daz,

If you have a good spark, correct fuel/air mix, good compression, and the valve and ignition timings are correct, the engine cannot fail to run, so something is still not quite right.

Ignition timing isn't easy to check on these, but make sure the ignition coils are wired the right way round (Blue/Yellow and Yellow/Blue wires), and that you have a decent fat blue spark at the plug, not a faint weak yellow one.

Check the spark plug gap - it should be around 0.025"

If the gap is too big, the plugs may fail to spark under pressure.

If you have changed the HT leads, are they copper or carbon cored?

T2BC hi m8, yeah something still not right eh m8, I feel like kicking it off the paddock stand at the moment, been doing checks on the wiring loom all day, found a pinched section of wiring, orderd another loom to be certain, luckily a guy ive got to know through buying bits n bobs over time had a couple n has done me a good deal being as ive had quite a bit of stuff off him, the bike dropped onto its left side a while back and the loom behind the battery box where my alarm was spliced into it had got pinched between the frame and the plastic under the seat, didn't really notice until today, no doubt when I find the problem it will be something stupid.

Does the alarm have an immobiliser or is just a noise maker?

Not entirely true, it obviously does have a sort of immobiliser. 😁
