For the last couple of rides there has been a quite unpleasant clunking sound on my ER6. It sounds like something is rattling, and the bike sounds a fair amount louder than it should...

Anyway, after investigating today it appears that my downpipes and end can have split quite neatly. There is a small gap but they have definitely come apart and at certain speeds the gap is larger.

I have attached a dodgy picture, I am hoping that exhaust paste can be used to bridge the gap and seal the two ends. What do you think?

A whole new exhaust system looks bloody expensive!!

Exhaust paste won't seal a moving gap - it has no mechanical strength.

If you want to bodge it, then get a tin can (beer cans aren't as good as they used to be), cut the top and bottom off it, get a second exhaust clamp, wrap the can around the exhaust (with exhaust paste between the can and the exhaust to seal it) and put a clamp on each end of the can so that one clamp is on each side of the split.

The can gives mechanical stability, the paste the seal. It'll pass an MOT that way too!

Hi

If it was me I'd run a bead of weld around it and start saving. I think you'd struggle even with a can if it's moving.

Looks like the joint between downpipe and can? are you sure its not just needing a new gasket? The clip looks far more rotten than the pipe.

If your not keeping long, check check ebay for a used one.

If your keeping bike long, would recommend a stainless motad as the best option.

Use a Sapporo beer tin. They are made of steel. It's a nice beer too.
Has to be ice cold though.
But you'll need aviation snips or a grinder to cut that fucker into a patch.
But the shape of the can lends itself well to what you want to do as well if you look at the ribs down the sides.
I wouldn't be surprised if a skillful welder could weld it as well.

Jap bike, jap beer can, can = exhaust...

It has a certain poetry about it.

Hmmm the exhaust and the downpipes are fine, it is just the seal between them. There is a gap of a couple of mm....so maybe a new gasket and clip?

Mine went about 2 years ago. I wrapped exhaust bandage around it and put 2 new clips on. Still there now. Thumbs Up

Yes, new gasket, clean it all up, preferably clean the shit off and a coat of high temp paint...
