After my accident last week I've spent a good while on the phone to insurance broker/handler - and underwriters.

I called in the claim as I was supposed to, reported it right away to a number on the broker's website - turned out to be a claims handler running an out of hours service for the broker.

Next day I went through the incident details on the phone with the broker in more detail this time.

Then today I was surprised to get a call from the underwriter themselves. Spent about an hour going through every single tiny aspect of my bike's insurance with them even down to getting put on a conference-call to the DVLA to give permission to retrieve my driving entitlement/conviction records. They checked everything in fine detail.

Luckily everything was in order, but I was surprised by the level of detail that they went into, certainly never experienced anything like it before. I guess in these days of rising false claims and outrageous compensations they have to be thorough but it did leave me concerned enough that if there were any minor details that were wrong (which it tuned out there were, but not on my part - more on that later) how it would have affected the way my claim went.

So be warned - if you're flying close to the wind with your insurance declarations, perhaps trying to keep costs down by missing out modifications or forgetting to declare claims - it's very easy to come un-stuck nowadays.

Have noticed this since the start of the year with three different companies when getting new insurance - didn't have the same problem the year before.

Yours or Winnies?

If yours, are you claiming against your own FC cover to get an immediate payout?

Mine.

No, I'm not claiming on my policy at the moment but the underwriter didn't know that until I told them in the call. Then she marked the form as 'for information only' but still carried on in a thorough manner.

The lady from the underwriter was supremely professional which is more than I can say for the broker. That's a story for another thread when I have the time to type it because it's a proper tl:dr Sad
