Front brake slow to return

When squeezing and letting go of the front brake lever on my Dad's Sprint the lever will return quite slowly. On my Speed Four which has more or less the same braking system if you let go the lever springs back into position.

What is this a symptom of?

Could be a few things. But the first thing I would try is thoroughly bleeding the brakes, and if that fails strip out the master cylinder to check the seals (may as well replace them by then).

Get the front wheel off the ground, spin it and see if when you put the brakes on the front wheel stops and as soon as you release the lever the wheel is free.
It might be more or less the same but different and you may be looking for a problem that isn't one.

I'm guessing he means in the master cylinder.

My guess would be perished seals in the mc. The flaking bits of rubber have got stuck.

Where is the 'Return spring'?

so you aint had an mc apart then.......your question should probably read" where is the return hole?"

its the tiny hole usually at the bottom of the countersunk ( some people think "blind hole" ) hole more towards the pressure end of the master cylinder, in the reservoir floor, sometimes under a tin shield.

have a think about why its there.

what happens when you push the caliper piston back in?

I would certainly go fro a seal kit and rebuild the master cylinder. About £25 and an easy enough job.
