Following years of neds tearing around Edinburgh on stolen bikes without let or hindrance, even openly Facebooking themselves on stolen bikes and being let off by the courts when finally caught, we're reached a new low.

In a daylight robbery attempt by a armed gang, the owner dialled 999 and not only did Scotplod not turn up, they then denied even receiving the call.

(Apologies for the survey-nag article, I can't find another. It's worth clicking "whatever" if you want to get your rage on.)

https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/gang-hammer-wielding-thieves-left-tear-5985311

Later, the armed thieves are seen riding around on stolen bikes unhelmeted, are pointed out to a Scotplod unit who essentially shrug and ask "What do you expect us to do about it?"

We've known for a while that non pursuit is increasingly becoming tacit policy, but Edinburgh Scotplod have gone right beyond publicly acknowledging it to pretty much admitting that their policy is to refuse to even treat anything involving a pikey and a bike as a crime, even when it involves an armed assault in progress.

So, there we are. Riding around helmeted on your own bike? You're a mug. Nick one or put on fake / foreign / no plates, and on the tiny offchance that any Dibble ever take an interest, just take your lid off and ride away.

I hope this has been useful to you.

Edited to fix broken link. -stinkwheel

I hope they take a similar attitude in their response to G/ABH allegations when people inevitably take matters into their own hands...

Which may or may not now be happening in Edinburgh.

On the other hand...

I wouldn't chase a kid on a bike with no helmet - coz if he stacked it and died, i would be responsible. Not the Force.

I would therefore expect to be in Court, charged with causing a death and then get sent to prison. I would also lose my job and therefore my house - and i wouldn't see my kids growing up. I would also expect a particularly 'harsh' time in prison.

So... i don't blame the cops at all. Can anyone come up with a viable and safe solution for stopping a bike/scooter intent on getting away?

I like the approach the American Plods take, ram the sucker with two tons of Highway Patrol Cruiser.

A simple change of policy to treat failing to wear a lid as something to be dealt with, not an excuse to avoid dealing with other things.

All the best

Viable and safe?!
Maybe you could politely ask them to stop.

...Wait no that's not exactly viable and probably not safe either.

Shoot the bellends, obviously.

Not every pursuit has to be hot.

That said...

Bear in mind that they're unlikely to be riding with any sort of consideration for other people or kittens.

There's also the very real consideration that this has reached the point of open flaunting and taunting.

The primary purpose of law enforcement is to deter crime, not to solve it. That's like evaluating zoo keepers on the number of escaped animals they shoot.

If it becomes known that there's literally no risk to riding around on stolen bikes, then it will - or it has - become both the means and the end of every pikey in this green and pleasant land.

Sometimes you have to quadraspaz a scrote pour encourager les autres.

Really?

Can you point me to some kind of evidence that this has actually happened, or are you just joining in with the worst case, what if, bleeding heart, every pikey deserves a chance attitude that is leading this country down the shitter?

How about a sensible approach.

Now I know this may sound a little crazy but, how about the onus of responsibility for qetting quadraspazzed or deaded lies purely and simply with the non lid wearing thieving pikey scum?

The Police carry out the will of the elected. There is some H&S pen pusher somewhere telling people what is and is not safe. I'll bet my bottom $$ this person does not own a motorbike.........

Have many plod friends most ex-military and they will happily tell you down the pub what they "would actually do" if they were allowed.

It's taking the piss how many scrotes are razzing around the local area helmetless on bikes with no numberplate now the weather is decent. I've phoned the local 101 number to report it and have had the 'we can't do anything about it' response.

Is there any way to get the police to pull their finger out? It seems fairly likely the bikes are nicked.

Surely all the police have to do is wait at a junction in an unmarked car and SMIDSY the scrotes... Might help if plod was using mobile phone at the time too..

could attach a big fishing net (like a landing net) from the roof of the police car to "hook a hoody"

or shoot them in the back with a tranq gun?

I've had the same "what about it?" response from the local "neighbourhood policing team" (or whatever they're calling themselves this week). Ironically, they only started razzing around the housing estates because Dibble did them for responsibly trailering their bikes and quads to the local waste ground where they were bothering nobody.

The lesson soon sunk in: don't have any plated vehicles around, don't wear lids, don't stop.

Sometimes you just need to go find the scrotes known to have stolen bikes and hospitalise them. Having first told them WHY they are about to spend a week eating and pissing through a tube.

Cleared, but was charged and on trial, it shows they will pursue officers over this. So they may be reluctant to gamble with the stakes so high for them.

frightening thought, isn't that how we ended up with the Battle of Orgreave, hillsborough cover-up etc.
The Police as a tool of the state, I'd rather they were seen to be operating with the goodwill of the public, or on behalf of the electorate, and ultimately accountable to the electorate through the democratic process (somehow)

Cleared though, and the jury was so directed. That's a message to the IPCC.

Chased him so hard that his son-in-law crashed two years later:

https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/inquest-adjourned-after-second-tragedy-897720

More significant is that their super sold them down the river and claimed that they already had a "no pursuit" policy to cover his own shiny backside:

https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/local-news/police-might-have-contributed-to-death-of-biker-900978

Not a stolen bike that time, no moral foggitry, but the decision to try and escape was his and his alone. Coppers can't make you ride beyond your ability.

Kinda what I'm getting at, the general approach in the public services (Police NHS etc) is the its best not to risk it because the guy who's trying to do his job, will be straight under the Bus to keep the managers/inspectors file nice and clean.
