Do you know if it has ever run with the flatslide carb on it?

With the mixture screw so far out am just wondering if someone has chucked it on and never got it jetted right / got it to run?

Hi,
What year is it?
reason im asking? most rs's came with dellorto 28mm ROUND slide carb.
1996-98 came with 34mm vhsb & this may well be a flatslide ...but every other year since then was the bog standard phbh 28mm. (which I hate with a passion because they are so fickle) unless a previous owner has upgraded? (well worth doing imho)
Do you know what model of carb do you have?

cheers,
GAZ

Hi

That isn't a standard carb for that bike.

With the idle speed screw I would screw it most of the way out, and just use the throttle until you get it started.

Is the timing correct? Is it still giving a spark when the plug is in place (had this once with an RS - plug out it cranked rapidly and spark, plug in it cranked more slowly and didn't spark - the gap to the ignition pickup with too big).

Is there reasonable compression?

All the best

Isn't the timing fixed at the cdi? Didn't think they were mechanically adjustable?

What happens with a bump start? Anything?

Checked for air leaks? Is the exhaust / can blocked?

Hi

In theory it is fixed. In practice it can be adjusted by changing the cdi, or by using an offset woodruff key. However what can happen is the woodruff key shears off and the timing goes miles out. Not heard of this happening with the RS but it wouldn't surprise me if it does (especially given that the starter motor operates on the flywheel).

All the best

Hi

Inductive timing light is probably the best thing to check it.

All the best

Hi

Just a strobe light that is triggered by a pickup that clips around the HT lead.

All the best

Hi

The older 123 engines used an SEM ignition system. On this you had to set the timing up statically, removing the flywheel to move the stator on its mounts (had slotted mounts).

The later 122 engined bikes (like this one) have a totally different ignition system which are far simpler but not designed to be adjusted (hence normally swapping the cdi to change the timing).

All the best

Hi

Easiest way is to look at the coil. Blue coil = SEM ignition = 123 engine. Black coil = Nippon Denso ignition (or someone has bodged on the ignition from the older 127 engine) = 122 engine.

The 122 engine should have it marked on the crank cases on the clutch side.

With a 2001 bike it should certainly be a 122 engine.

All the best

had a bit of experience with these, a few things to try:

get a brand new spark plug (and I mean brand new, if it has got wet even once you can pretty much forget it)

try a short reach plug out of a strimmer/mower etc, if it is flooded to fuck (which it probably is) the plug wont get as wet and may just fire it into life (had great success with this on many bikes including paddy's old gp lol)

Check the reed valves very carefully, slightest bit of damage to them and it wont go.
