Minutes silence today, did you?

For the victims of the Tunisia thing. I was at a trackday at Cadwell when they announced it would be observed at 12.00. I found it a bit awkward and wondered why we were all doing it. I do feel sorry for the victims and families but I didn't know any of them so couldn't really think of anything meaningful to think except how hot it was
Minutes silences seem be be a bit overdone nowadays, loads of them at sporting events all through the year.
Am I just being a cynical old twat or do others think this?

Yes.

One of the girls who was killed was one of our graduates. Actually graduated at the same time from the same uni as me.

I was disappointed with the institution as they haven't mentioned a word about it publicly as far as i am aware. Even the silence was organised by the students union.

In response to "should you care", that's up to you. I thought about how a woman younger than me had had their life taken away just as it was getting properly started, and then about what kind of nutter it takes to think that killing 38 innocent and unarmed people is a 'just' act.

I'm with OGR on this.

To me it is just a little bit tedious and only organised by Cameron as a political "ohh look what a very nice man I am" game.

Of course it was a sad and tragic event but, a minutes silence by a nation is way OTT IMO.

Will he be announcing a minutes silence when the X amount of British pensioners die this winter because they can't afford to keep warm.

This was nothing more than an exercise by politicians to try to make themselves look good.

All the girls in work ripped into me when I said I thought it was a stupid idea.

I hold two minute's silence each year for the hundreds of thousands of people who signed up and knowingly went to their deaths to keep the world free of tyranny (whether that's worked is for another thread...); a minute's silence for 30 odd people who unluckily went to the wrong place on holiday??? Pure politics. More people have died on the roads between then and now. Not that I don't feel for them, but a silence is a mark of respect in my book, not of being a bit upset and sympathetic.

Good know I'm not the only one who thinks a bit like that!!!




I also got ripped a new one when Princess Di died and my first words on the subject in work (different work to yesterday) were "oh well, that's the rock 'n' roll life - live fast, die young."

Had a conversation with my 16 year old daughter where I asked why she had posted her sadness about a random teenage suicide on Twitter.
She couldn't exactly say why she had done it, just that she thought she should tell other people about how sad it was.

I quite agree that the minutes silenced thing is overused.

I think it's quite important on remembrance day and such like. The scale of people who died in the first world war alone is just phenomenal and I think you need a good minute to put that into perspective, let alone the second world war, and every conflict since.

I can kind of understand holding a silence if it's relevant to the setting (ie A silence to remember the Hillsborough victims, at a football match).

But chucking in a minutes silence to remember anybody who has recently died really does seem an abuse. I certainly don't need to have silence forced upon me to remember people who have died. I don't feel any more sympathy to the Tunisia victims families, than I would to any other families who have been bereaved recently.

I did observe it by accident. Was listening to music at my desk when I was aware the fire alarm sounded for a fews secs. Looked around, no one making a move for a exit. Earphones back in.

Minute later, there goes that alarm again. Oh well, they must be testing it or something.

Not even sure it made any headlines out here in NZ tbh, although I've been so busy lately I've not really kept up with world news, just a quick look at BBC News website in the evenings.

No minutes silence or anything here, and if I was back in the UK I'd probably not be too fussed. It was a terrible thing that happened, no doubt. I feel bad for the friends and family who lost loved ones. But some people died, life goes on.

They didn't save the world, they weren't defending a nation, they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, which sucks for them, but really doesn't affect me.

Minutes silences are getting a bit too common now, when I used to be a football season ticket holder there were several of them a season... aside from the two minutes silence before the match nearest Armistice Day or Remembrance Day I never really knew what we were doing it for or why. Often it was a "lifetime fan" who'd died. Well sorry, but he was in his late 80s, people die, sorry for your loss but get over it, apart from 2 or 3 fans in the ground, the other 20-odd thousand don't care, me included.



I wouldn't have chosen to observe it but I wouldn't tell other people they shouldn't... if they want to observe it thats fine, I would just keep quiet for the minute and think of what I might be having for dinner, or just get on with some work in silence.

I was in a conference on Friday that observed it. A silent minute out of my life isn't that significant TBH although I agree with the sentiment that it's overused by politicians for fairly shallow reasons.
