this has been brewing for a while but today just pushed me over the edge.
firstly i have no issue with people meeting up and having a chat.
so if you are in a clump at the cat and fiddle,snake pass,bala lake,ponderosa or any other place then fine do what you enjoy its not hurting anyone.
HOWEVER!
due to me having a new bike this year im doing more miles and encountering more bikers.
why do you need to ride in groups?
why do you hold up other traffic when riding in these groups?
why do you ride spread out enough that a car driver cant pass you so you end up with a tailback.
a couple of times this week i have worked my way to the front of a queue of traffic to find its not a tractor or a caravan its "bikers"
the tipping point today was about 20 "bikers" following a group of peddle bicyclists .
the twats causing a roadblock from dolgellau to bala last weekend need a kick up the chuff.
blocking motorbikes from passing because you are in a group?
jesus!
ok if you were a bunch of 50cc scooter boys then fine you are doing your best.
if you are going to ride in a group then at least do the speed limit and stay left so people can pass,and dare i suggest looking in your mirrors and having a good hard look at yourself.
just venting my spleen.

I know the feeling. Tends to be the cruiser crew up here when I see that. Twice now I've seen them do this on this exact bit of road. They're even more of a pain in the arse on country roads. They often block overtakes well under the limit - never had any other road users block an overtake.

It's an overtaking lane on the outside you bellends, don't sit in it to ride alongside your mates. They were making weird hand signals to each other, progressively slowing down. I made sure to pass them as close as I possibly could at the redline. I genuinely don't know what they were doing, probably pretending they were on an episode of "Sons of Anarchy" since their wives let them out for the night.

I encountered them going down Glen Ogle the other week. A big queue of cars with about 10 cruisers at the front holding everyone up. Mad

Groups are usually as slow as the slowest biker in the group. They ride that way to stay as a group. I ride alone because I wouldn't get anywhere or find it enjoyable if I had to wait for people.

A bit of traffic or group of bikers are easy to overtake when you are on a bike. I don't know why you're whining.

Looks like North Wales constabularies motorcycle policing policy is paying off then.

On a side note. Why you no pass? Passing bikes on another bike isn't exactly hard.

Last ride-out I was on with my club, the 8 bikes in our group ripped past another group of about a dozen dawdlers within three corners on the road into Devils Bridge at Kirkby Lonsdale.

Beautiful to watch from my position as tail-end Charlie. Synchronised overtaking. There was one point where all our bikes were spaced out among all their bikes and you saw them peel-out and put the hammer down one at a time, starting at the front, as the next corner opened out.

You won't get stuck behind our club with the one exception of going to or from a funeral.

I managed to pass them fine. I was just surprised that it was a group of bikers at the front of the queue of traffic, and not a caravan, that's how slow they were going.

I loathe riding in groups of more than three or so. It usually ends up with someone either being too slow, or someone being billy big bollocks with a point to prove.

They are known as FWBs. (AKA Car-driving motorcycle owners)

We need them as they spend their money in the bike shops.

If the group ride I went on yesterday was anything to go by, the leader should just pin it everywhere, and everyone else do their level best not to get lost Laughing

On a bit of the M3 (or was it M27? Laughing ), we just kept our spacing so that anyone who wanted to pass could just easily filter through us, even though we were passing other traffic, and we do tend to move back to the empty lanes when we can.

Etiquette? Leave the bike in front with plenty of space so that he doesn't have to worry about you being stuck up his chuff when he's deciding on a cornering line. Don't automatically follow the overtakes of the guy in front; wait for a safe opportunity in your own judgement, as you would if riding alone.

I really don't see what the big deal about group rides is. I never have problems with it. Just be sure everyone knows at least how to get to the destination on their own, be in contact with everyone via mobile so if you drop behind and lose them, they're not going to be stopped somewhere wondering if you've come off and are bleeding out in the road.

And for the love of God, if you're going to stop to allow others to catch up, do it somewhere sensible, e.g. a layby or somewhere you're not causing a hazard (like on a roundabout - yes, saw this yesterday; pillock Rolling Eyes ).

There are systems you can use to keep everyone together, like 2nd man stops to see the rest through at junctions, sits on the relevant exit of a roundabout (refer to above). But I think it's easier and safer just to brief the route beforehand. What does it matter if the group gets split up a bit, as long as you all enjoy the ride and get home safe at the end?

Whenever I come across a big group of bikes moving slowly I give a polite wave with my left hand as I overtake. Nothing to get upset about. Chances are you won't meet the same group twice on a ride because they tend to pull up at every opportunity for a chat and a cup of tea....

Agree beforehand what you're going to do and stick to it.

Are you going to try and all stay together all the time? I'd be careful about that, particularly with a fresh license and unfamiliar bikes. You don't want to follow-the-leader into a ditch or an ill judged overtake.

If you're OK with splitting up, decide what you'll do if someone breaks down or gets lost so that it doesn't turn into a drama.

I've enjoyed riding with one other bike, and with hundreds or thousands of other bikes. Less so in between.

5 is an interesting number in a group. Not big enough to bother worrying about the 'drop off' system, or the group being so strung out that you run the risk of getting separated. Instead it's just the right size for the guy at the front to pin it and hope everybody keeps up (whilst checking his mirror to make sure you are all there).

I actually prefer a bigger group because it tends to force decisions to be made before the start. However, I'm sure your group of middle aged gents will be fine as long as you sort the rules beforehand. May sound daft or obvious but just agreeing to stick to the speed limits means everybody should be able to keep up, and keep their licence.

intresting thread i been chatting to the SS MC lads and some other MCC guys around mine and they all have diffrent oppions
surprisingly the MC lads said they ride out they stick together and the *try* to not block up trafic but it cant be helped on b roads but they have and do pull over if need or some one bracks down.

the MCC lot the most come recation was fuckem.... nuff said really

If the front of a group of six bikes is sticking to the speed limit, the back one will be doing 80-90mph just to keep up.

EDIT: The rider of the front bike can also be done for it if the following bikes in the group are pulled for speeding. There is prescedent, happened a couple of years ago somewhere near York. I'll try and find the story.

EDIT2: Found it. Ken Clark. He was doing 86 but got done for 103mph because that's how fast the following bike was going. Instead of a fine and three points he got a higher fine and 6 points. At a crown court which can be cited as prescedent.

There are three kinds of ride outs,

Group A rides - a huge amount of motorcycles, police stopping the traffic etc. - boring and my bike suffers from heat, but I like to chat with people about their motorcycles.

Group B rides - small amount of people on 160+mph sportsbikes going as fast as they can. - Mostly a very dangerous ride out, I'm not a fan.

Group C rides - small amount of people on slow or rather old motorcycles, not exceeding the speed limits, not overtaking on the solid line etc. - Sometimes I like that, sometimes I don't. Depends on the weather and whether the people can keep up.

The best riding you can have is on your own. Thumbs Up
