that bloody VT500!! no oil pressure

Afternoon!
As some of you may remember I managed to blow the engine in my old Honda up.
Smegballs had a spare, so I got that off him and fitted it.
I had to swap the casings from my old engine.
Now I left it until a month ago in the back garden. I finally found out why the bike wouldn't fire up and got a new starter solenoid.
Now 2 weeks ago I took it to get it MOTed.
Half way there the oil light came on and I noticed I had a shiny boot
I added more oil, but the old oil had got water in from being stood all winter.
Bike didn't pass MOT.
I went about a mile home and gave up and called the nice RAC man.
I have now replaced and drained out all the old cack that was in there, and replaced the leaky gasket.
However the oil light stays on and the engine sounds like someone has dropped a bag of spanners into the rocker covers.
How do I get the oil pressure back up? Or has the oil/water mix knackered the oil pump?

the 'spanners' could well be the ends knocking.

I'm only guessing based on what you've written of course
but no oil pressure + nasty noises usually = fubar engine
( or long winded expensive repair)
A vid may help others decide

Its not always that easy to locate the exact source of an engine noise
It depends on what, where and how bad, but broadly speaking
you'll get:

Main bearings usually 'rumble' all the time
Big ends can sometimes be quiet until you rev it or put the motor under load.
Cam shaft or cam chain can give a machine gun rattle even on tick over.

my guess is that the oil pump is probably fuct, or the line that feeds the top end is blocked or too small(always was an issue of the honda v engines of that period) and the cams have started to eat the heads (also a common issue)
you should remove that terrible honda engine and replace it with yamahas terrible v twin of the age the xz550

i think its probably a lost cause, but first thing to do before you go any further is pull the rocker covers off and see what state the cams and journels are looking like.

if fuct, then its not worth your time or money doing anything more.

You've run it on emulsified oil until the pressure light came on. This normally means that one or more things that rely on a high pressure oil feed has been killed.

I presume you still have the old engine, so it is possible that the dead bit in the new engine is a working bit in the old engine.

Armchair diagnosis is unlikely to be effective. The only proper diagnosis is to strip the engine down and look for the damage. The upshot is that damage is likely to be obvious from a visual inspection, rather than needing lots of special measuring gear to find out if something is in tolerance. You should still measure whatever is going in as a replacement though.

If it sounds like a top end bearing, then it's quite possible that the cam journals are knackered. Fit the heads (inc camshafts) from the other engine.

You should also check the crank and the oil pump. It should be a roller bearing crank, so comparatively difficult to kill.

Or just stick it on ebay and buy something else. I'll be selling an NTV600 soon, if you want something just as boring.
