 |
|
every time I drive the wife's car it pisses me off, slightest bit of sun and I can't see anything due to the inside of the windscreen looking foggy, mists up really quickly and badly when it's raining / cold too
everything I've tried in the past just smears it around and makes it streaky, anyone any ideas?

More details required, what car would be a good start.
Is it a VAG car?

Fair enough, reason I asked is because they are notorious for leaking seals. Particularly around the ancillaries carriers
behind the door cards. VAG actually design some of their doors to allow rainwater to literally pass through them
and out of drain holes on the bottom of the door where it then just runs off the sill. Which is fine until the seals fail,
then it comes in and goes under the carpets instead soaking the sound insulation underneath, it takes
months to dry out and the carpets may well seem dry but a good firm press may reveal hidden moisture.
Easiest fix for that was removing door cards and resealing with something like plumbers gold although
I prefererred Shell Tixophalte as it's a non setting bituminous sealant.
I'd certainly check to see if water isn't already present in the car, penny to a pound water is getting in somewhere.
A Wiper Washer hose union (usually for the rear wiper as that hose often passes through the interior
of the car) could have popped apart, failed door seal, blocked wiper scuttle drain holes, even a large
spill in the boot/footwells could cause this.
My mrs had a 2 litre bottle of mineral water go over in her car boot, it fell out of her gym bag
and the lot emptied into the wheel well. Her windows did the same until I dried it all up.
Try a nose through this lot and see what's what, it seems ingress is a problem with these cars.

it's only a little bit of moisture we're getting, usually when we've gotten into the car from in the rain (which happens a fair bit in lancashire) but it comes on quick as the screen is mucky and the normal fan can't shift it quick enough (aircon shifts it quickly)
had this issue in all cars we've owned, the exception being my 1980 Fiesta!
I think the misting up will go away if I get the glass cleaned properly so I'll try the newspaper trick and see how we go ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

Fair enough I just use any supermarket glass cleaner and blue towel roll (hand drying stuff like at petrol stations)
for cleaning interior glass.
Try and find a vinegar based glass cleaner spray. Or just use some white vinegar and a rag, the glass may just need degreasing. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

Good point, I've seen these get damp in the past (aircon condensation in the vent pipework), and cause misting problems
they are often located in or around the passenger footwell. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

Seeing as I work in this area I can help. It's a "property" called fogging exhibited by your probably PVC coated dashboard.
Sunlight can help plasticiser breakdown and escape as volatiles.
It hits your windscreen and forms a film.
The rate at which it forms is prescribed by the manufacturer and they deem that acceptable for your monies.
Use some soapy stuff, it'll get rid of that lovely plasticiser film ____________________ I'm Sam; Northern, Ginger, Lover

Windshield Wonder
Seriously, a bit of water and a taut microfibre cloth on a weird plastic handle genuinely works wonders. I like mine, it does the best job of all the things I have tried. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

Well ya bugger - is THAT what it is. That'll be why my Aygo ( that is always ditched outside ) does it and my S2000 ( which is always garaged ) doesn't.
Is that the only cause or just the most common cause in newish / new vehicles over and above dirt / filth / traffic skank. ____________________ 2017 Z1000SX |

It will also rely on the quality of what Toyota specd for the Aygo vs what Honda did for the S2000. These materials get a hell of a beating, surface temperatures can reach over 100 C on a dashboard in sunlight.
People use polish to clean their "leather" seats and interiors, it is common for the propellant to break down the uppermost lacquer layer which is there, in part to stop plasticiser migration and, to stop dye ingress etc.
Obviously other dirt inside the car, sneezing coughing and the like can coat the inside of your car and will be a factor of what ends up on your windscreen.
Top tip, DON'T USE polish, we get specs to be resistant to leather cleaners and wipes, not Pledge. ____________________ I'm Sam; Northern, Ginger, Lover

Put a sock full of cat litter under the seat. Stopped misting problems for me. ____________________ Well, you know what they say. If you want to save the world, you have to push a few old ladies down the stairs.
