My car bluetooth requires a specific version of Android (4.3) in order for it to utilise the bluetooth MAP profile (something Android have decided to remove from Lollipop!).

So, I've found a phone that has an early version of android on it, but I need to know if there is an easy way to upgrade it from 4.1 to the 4.3 version I need - or will it automatically update itself to the latest version (the shite 5.0 I have subjected by Galaxy S5 to and wished I hadn't).

Thanks

IMO if the 'check for updates' doesn't get you anywhere the best you can do is search for a custom rom for that particular phone.

I think you'll probably find it's easier and less hassle to change the radio than to try and get a specific version of Android. Google will desperately try and push the latest (Lollipop) on you regardless of your desires.

I had to send a phone back under warranty to get a replacement due to the Lollipop update.

Dunno but the Galaxy Nexus' final update was 4.3 so it's a fair bet that any one you buy will be right for the job.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I figured out what the issue was with the new car's bluetooth system - basically it needs additional functionality enables by the dealer (which they won't do, as they won't admit to it being a 5 minute coding exercise, as it will show the £400 option up for the con it is).

So yeah, I've decided not to change the phone, as that's not the problem.

Do you have an Audi/ Vw / Skoda?

Software is free, you can pick up a cable cheaply. Colleague has enabled loads of stuff on his skoda because all the hardware is fitted, it's just not enabled in the software. Borrowed a cable and turned the stuff on...

No, it's a 15 plate BMW 435.

I've done coding stuff myself on all my/our BMW's to date, but the new ones need a different cable and software, and to be honest I'm a little reluctant to piss about with it seeing as it's only a month old.

It was only a minor thing of being able to read text messages on the car's system anyway- it does everything else, so I'm not that bothered. It was just confusing me as the sales guy told me it would - which is correct, if you choose the "enhanced bluetooth" option. Rolling Eyes

Turns out "enhanced" means you get a cradle to charge the phone under the centre armrest and a few functional benefits on the iDrive unit - these are just the coding tasks, I discovered.
