Anyone know about the Aprilia ETX 125cc?

Hi guys.

I've been looking at an Aprilia ETX 125, managed to get the guy down for about £800.. The bike looks in good condition, its been well looked after and apparently it rides great too.

These bikes seem extremely rare, apparently there's only 6 or 7 on the roads right now in the UK, I was just wondering if anyone had any information on this bike as there's not much online.

How is it reliability wise? And how much power does the engine have? I read 12bhp but that seems too low for a 2 stroke 125? Even my WR 125 4 stroke had 15bhp, just any details on this bike would be much appreciated, I'm hoping to turn it into a nice project too so if I go for it I'll make sure to post the progress of it

They seemed to be Aprilia's cut price lower spec RX125 successor for a while right at the end of the 90's. They do look better than the DTR, KMX etc, but are definitely more road bike with off road looks than a road legal off roader.

They only seemed to offer them as learner legal under 15bhp bike's, and when you look at the Rotax engine you will find the cylinder is different to the RS125etc and has the powervalve slot blanked off in the casting. I don't think any of the RAVE controller parts are fitted either, so other than maybe changing the exhaust/checking for a restrictor, I don't think you can tune them much without swapping in an RS125 motor and doing some re-wiring of the loom to accept the powervalve controller etc.

They look nice, but when you compare them to earlier RX125's, the chromed steel rims, steel swing arm, and lower spec suspension and brakes make them look a bit second rate.

None of that should concern you if it's a tidy bike and you just want a nice 125cc to run around on. They are quite rare and unusual now, just like the air cooled Cagiva W8 for example. But they make a nicer 125 than any overpriced new Four stroke IMO.
