Can't get my knee down!

Been riding again for about 3 weeks after a long lay off. Never thought about getting my knee down before but have had a few sessions on this corner on my new bike. Can't do it! Any tips? Common mistakes?

Yes I want to be a street Rossi.

You Sir, are a disgrace! Anyway, to help you, find a sharper corner or go faster. If you go slow in a blunt corner, you'd have to really, really push your self out of the bike.

Pic looks like you're riding crossed. Gotta drop your elbow more and your head should be behind your mirror almost. Get lower on the bike and move an arse cheek off and stick the knee right out.

Even after doing all that and going 55 round a huge roundabout I was at least 3-4 inches off according to my mate following behind, and i have only millimeters of tyre unused on the right side so I'm saying fuck it save it for the track/more capable bike

Find a nice, quiet roundabout with a nice surface. Two on a dual carriageway or bypass is best as you can gas it between them and get your tyres nice and hot.

Get your body position right. In your case, slide more of your arse of the seat and lock your outside leg against the tank. Get your head down lower so its down near or below your mirror and think about putting your inside knee back, not down. A relatively high gear helps keep it smooth too.

Do laps of roundabout getting progressively quicker until you either:

A. Get knee down
B. Lowside like a noob
C. Smash into another road user.

I've been riding over 20 years and if my knee is on the road it either means I've broken down or fallen off. I like to think I'm a fairly quick rider.

Even if I'm not as fast as i think I am. I know several people who are (and have trophies to prove it) who have pristine knee sliders on their road leathers and have them worn down to the velcro on their race leathers.

KD is for the track, not the road.

You could hang off or just buy a daytona. You are perched on it and you knee just falls on the floor.

I'd never ever got my right knee down. This was my first track day on my first session with the daytona

On the road however I've never done it, roads here are shite.

Standing by for I've just been dumped on my arse on a low side, anybody know I can get cheap bits from....
I followed a chap on a GSXR trackbike at Cadwell. He had his knee dragging on most corners, I didn't. We lapped together for most of all the sessions (until It rained. Then I left with a session to go and pissed off into Louth and got pissed).
My chum, a track day regular thought he was a bit quick and took the piss out of my bolt upright style until his girlfriend timed us. Then he wound his neck in and flounced off.
Maybe if I had the skill to save a front wheel slide on my knee I'd bother. I don't, so I'm not fussed.

I can scrape the pegs on my Fazer around a couple of bends I like on one of my regular routes if I am in that mood but the rear shock is rather saggy.

First thing you want to do is get some leathers, getting your knee down on the road at speed with jeans on will hurt... a lot. also if you get it wrong and you & the bike part company you want to be able to get up and not have to visit A&E to get gravel and dirt picked out of your wounds.

I touched my knee down for a brief millisecond on my old CBR600F, I shat my pants.


To achieve kneedown on the road I pretty much had to be one or more of the below:

Going too fast to react to road conditions and other vehicles,
Leant way too low for good visibility (seeing and being seen), or,
Hanging way too far off the bike to have decent control over the bike (especially if going too slow for the above two to count)
Crashing.

Because of that I gave up trying. That isn't to say it isn't possible on the road, but the opportunities to do so safely seem pretty limited to me. Especially on our over-congested, pothole ridden, hedgerow lined, hidden junctioned roads in the south east of England!

You might have more luck on better roads.
