Hi this is my first post on this forum and i'm sorry i'm chucking a question at you guys straight away but I have recently had my stator burn out on my Honda sp1 and I believe it took the reg/rec and battery with it, I have replaced the battery and reg/rec but I am looking at either getting my stator rewound or buying a pattern part replacement, does anyone know good reliable companies for these options?
Cheers

Crikey that was quick cheers. I've seen these mentioned on some forums, mostly good but a couple of bad reviews. Have you used them personally?

Yep, as have a few mates and members of this forum. Can't fault them.

I had a stator rewound for my CBF1000 by West Country Windings.

Decent turnaround of a few days, so definitely recommended Thumbs Up

Thanks for the quick replies its much appreciated, not too fussed about turnaround more worried about the quality of the work. This OEM stator failing has cost me nearly £300 so I don't want to replace it with something that will fail 1000 miles down the line. How many miles has the rewound one done on your CBF1000?

and these https://www.electrexworld.co.uk/

it's probably not the stator that caused the problem, it's the reg/rec, a too common fault with the CBR, VFR ranges

it can either not charge the battery at all, or work too hard, boiling the battery and burning the stator out

My reg/rec was from electrexworld I upgraded this winter did about 5 hours of riding and then I had all the problems, they are checking it now I will find out tomorrow if it is blown but I tested across the diodes myself and one seems to be blown. I'm not sure which is the culprit but I did read that if you have a short to ground on the stator which I have this can blow the diodes so i'm not sure where I stand, apart from out of pocket. But if it was the new reg/rec at fault i'm not going to go electrexworld for a new stator.

Stators rarely die, I would recommend a used replacement, but there does not seem to be any directly listed on ebay.. its likely to be a common part number with other hondas.

Another option is to rewind it yourself. Enamelled wire is cheap and it is a relatively easy task. You need to note number of turns, direction and order of each pole as you take the old windings off. Many guides on the net, takes about an hour.

Stator is designed for the high temperatures of being shorted to ground. Unless the engine is running extremely hot, it should not short the stator.

If the reguator fails and shorts battery though a coil, that will kill the stator.

Just posted it to west country windings, £126 with 6 months warranty. Happy with that. Just heard that apparently my reg/rec is definitely ok so things aren't as bad as first thought.
Thanks for the help guys.

I know nothing of the SP1 but agree with Kramdra in that many stators last for years and I'd give the whole system a close examination to try and find why it failed.
Dont just fit and forget, check it for output, regulation and heat in use
especially the connectors.

Stators are a known fault with Hondas, Fretgrinder will be along shortly to tell you why.

Stators can certainly be an issue, particularly on the Mk 1 Honda CBF 1000 from 2006 to 2010 and also the CBR engine that it uses.

They are well know to blow on the aforementioned bike, I've had 2 go, one at 14k and the most recent one at 40k.

My most recent stator failure was a pretty hairy one, as the stator decided that it couldn't be bothered to work any more, while I was in the right hand lane of the M4 and killed all the electrics. Luckily, I managed to coast over to the hard shoulder.

This is what greeted me when the engine cover came off -

It turns out that it's not completely the fault of the stator itself, but also the flywheel, Honda rectified the problem in the Mk2 by modifying the flywheel so that the stator has better cooling and also adding extra cooling channels so that the engine oil can flow for better cooling.

I shall be shortly be getting a new stator and modified flywheel for my CBF 1000 and I'll be keeping the old stator as a "get me home" spare for the long journeys.
