Newbie help im at my wits end........

Hi all firstly i would like to apologies for my lack of knowledge and laziness to search..... I have almost given up before i have started...... I have just changed jobs and want to get a 125 to commute. I passed my car driving test aug 2003 i have spent hours surfing the dvla website and loads of google searches to no avail it appears most people will offer an answer followed by ... I think!


Can someone please tell me what i need to look for on my license to be able to ride a 125cc on l plates for 2 years. With a cbt and then just resit my cbt after 2 years.... I would be grateful if anyone can give me a 100% definitive answer im fed up with no-one being able to guarantee what is required... Its all so blooming confusing and they appear to be doing everything to deter people to ride.... Why?

I expect there's people on here who can, but why not give a local training school a ring and ask them? The chances are that they'll get your CBT money and an accurate response is in their interest.

Do your CBT and you can ride the 125 for 2 years

To ride a 125cc geared bike, you will need to sit a CBT. Nothing shows up on your licence to show you have it though, it's just a certificate.

As above and just as an aside of further information - you don't even need to do your CBT on a geared motorcycle in order to ride a geared motorcycle. You can do it on a twist and go scoot and still be entitled to ride a geared bike.

Redoing the CBT every 2 years to continue on with a 125 is just daft though and you'll be wanting to pass your test and get a bigger bike. They're better. That's the truth of it.

If you passed car test in 03 then you can do your CBT, theory, MOD1 and MOD2 and ride whatever you like forever more (so long as you use a full A category entitled bike for said tests) or you could do it all on your own 125 then rip up the L plates but just be restricted to a 125 until you grew a pair of balls to do it all again on a proper bike

2. Motorcycle licence requirements
If you have a provisional motorcycle licence, you MUST satisfactorily complete a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course.

You can then ride unaccompanied on the public road a motorcycle up to 125 cc, with a power output not exceeding 11 kW, with L plates (in Wales either D plates or L plates, or both, can be used), for up to two years.

Full car licence plus CBT, ride anything up 125cc with l-plates for two years. Repeat.

Search for motor bike riding schools, your CBT will be about 100 notes inc bike hire and last around 4 hours.

Do your CBT forget A1 A2 A types at the moment - they make more sense once your riding a 125cc.

In summary.

Book CBT with local training school £100 (most supply bike ask regarding kit) ride anything upto and including 125cc bikes for two years.
