So i just read this

I have to say, i find half faired bikes kind of ugly, either go full faired or birthday suit.

still, an 800 version could be a nice one to bridge the gap between the street and the speed triple Razz

First thoughts were it was a bit fugly. But having looked a few times, I think it looks ok. It doesn't have the class, style and uniqueness of the original though.

So the standard bike is +5bhp on the current one. But with an 800cc motor has to come extra weight no?

So that means opting for the STR or the 125bhp option. The RT is nearly £10k with the "option" of a half fairing. That's a £2k more than an MT09 Tracer!

I might be an idiot, but am I missing something.
The ST might be redundant now due to extra weight and little extra power, making the STR the only real option for the naked. And the other models are far too expensive for what they are compared to the competition.

All conjecture based on nothing. Will have to wait and see.

it does seem a little bit like triumph have been put on the back foot by the competition and are panicking a bit to keep up.
Even though the street has sold well consistently for several years, maybe sales have dipped a bit this year
im hoping to buy an RX at the end of the year as a step up from my current cbr500, perhaps when i px that a couple of years later teh 800 will be a good step up for me (Edit) but not if it weighs a ton, one of the things i like so much about the striple is how light and nimble it is

I'm reading it as replacing the existing 675s rather than in addition to them.

Bug eyed freak version is still unapologetically ugly, the half faired is meh.

Such Top Trumps masturbation over peak power figures, very important to Paddy and Journo Jack on a test jolly, neither of whom will actually buy one new.

If it brings the price of pre-ragged 675s down a bit though, I'm all for it.

Had to laugh at the RT being branded as a sports tourer. Stupid seat and next to no weather protection. Just more marketing hype.

Mind you, surely they wouldn't be using the RT moniker unless it really was a genuine, mile munching, comfortable old man's bike.

No Triumph you thick cunts, Tiger for touring, Street for the coolest people around.

Need to really think about releasing ugly as fuck bikes with good triple competition around...

Which one? I quite like the bug eye one. By "like" I of course mean hate, it's egregiously hideous, but it's absolutely unmistakable.

The half faired one, wow such Fazer very Bandit. Sleeping

MCN is so full of shit, they have to bring out a paper every week with fresh news in a market that just doesn't move that quickly

I'd welcome an 800, with more power, next year please as my repayments end then

the prices are complete arse, if they don't compete with the tracer they'll sell poorly and they'll be giving away free accessories and low finance after 6 months to buy customers

and those spy shots? only the green one is a street (cosmic green, 2013 colour), the others are speed triples, single sided swingarms a dead giveaway

Half-faired version looks like a Fazer ripoff. Neutral

Old round-headlights Triple was the best, the new bugeyes are too flat and timid-looking and do not complement the bike's curves as well as the round headlights did. Especially fugly without a flyscreen.

533 Tracers sold in March and April vs 8000-odd total STriples.

That's no reason for Triumph to come out with that vile thing!

These were my first thoughts. The STR is going to be a difficult act to follow. More power might be welcome if the weight is kept the same, but if not, will it just be an emasculated Speed Triple? And that seems to many who have ridden them to be a bit meh - would Triumph have been better off putting some fresh zest into the big brother?

On the other hand, 800 seems like a good size - talk of Fazers, one thing that bike was, was a good all-rounder. Ok, you maybe lose some excitement in such a bike, but in real world terms they work bloody well on the road. 800cc seems to fit that category rather well.

As to styling, well, what can ya do? Has anyone come up with something in the last 5 years that has been a big hit aesthetically? Some mighty ugly bikes out there already.

Wut?

The Street Triple has the lowest seat out of all of those quick naked bikes. I'm 5 foot 6 with very short legs and I handle my Street Triple R perfectly well.

By the way, these are MCN 'mock ups' so the faired one might not look like a Fazer.

I wonder which employee sold these pics as theres never anyone milling about around there haha. I live about two miles from the factory and you do see some weird and wonderful stuff along the A47/A5. Its in close proximity to MIRA too so they probably use the test track facilities there.

I should get my disposable out and camp on the roundabout outside the factory.

yes they do use MIRA, especially the cobbled road bit as they have to test panniers and top boxes there to see if they fall off, although you're best off camping at the back gate as they don't take new bikes out of the front until they want them to be seen.

I get the point of the upgrade, but only if they keep it the same weight as previously.

What I don't get however, is the RS. So triumph are going to make a Street Triple model which absolutely dominates the Speed Triple R? I think this purported move is a good thing for the Street Triple but a bad thing for the Speed Triple.

Speed Triple is fun to hustle about and wheelies for days (a bit like a street come to think of it) but is too heavy and doesn't like to rev. It's well overdue an update, it hasn't changed for years.

They generally appeal to people who are:

Of a certain age
Determined to buy British
Demand bikes must have 'character'
Oblivious to the potential better options, eg. S1000R etc

I'm not saying its a bad bike, I loved the test ride I had on one and it certainly has its charm, but I can't help thinking there are better options.

Pretty much sums up my issues. the test ride I had on one just left me totally underwhelmed. CB1000R, S1000R, Tuono V4, Superduke, Z1000, Streetfighter 848/1098... It's literally the worst bike in its class. It's slower than it's younger, cheaper brother. The R model doesn't really add much - in that the base bike is so out of touch with the kit they've put on it.

The Daytona 675 lump has a specific output of 185bhp/l, the Street Triple motor measures at 155bhp/l. Neither of which are highly strung engines, yet the 1050cc Speed Triple only has 135bhp... Come on triumph, you can do better than that. Granted it's not always about power, but when you have a bike with 400cc less in the same series that's able to give it a kicking, I think you have to go back to the drawing board. If the RS becomes reality the Speed Triple becomes a bike bought purely on design choice, with all measurable statistics thrown out of the equation - I don't think it's good enough to survive on that merit.

Actually, they are good at one thing at least...
