I have a gilera smt 50cc. Basically, I was riding it back one night when I noticed it start to lose power and drag along abit asif something was pulling it back. Anyway it regained speed again until about 10 minutes or so of riding, the same thing happened again but this time it just completely stalled on me? The bike wouldn't start at all after this but luckily it stalled just by the turning into my village so it was only a 200 yard push or so to get it back to my house. I had a look at it the next day and noticed that it would start up fine, but as soon as revs were taken off, it wouldn't run idle, it would just stop. I tried to have a look at the cause but I am a complete bike newbie. I cleaned out the air filter, spark plug, replaced the oil and re-adjusted the fuel to oil ratio pin and eventually got the bike to run idle. The idle running round was a lot louder and tinnier, but when the bike was in year and moving it sounded okay. Anyway I took it out to see how it rides and found that I still have the problem of it randomly losing power and eventually stalling? I have no experience with bike repairs and have no idea what is causing this? At first I thought it was a problem with the vacuum on the intake side of the carb, but even when the choke is on, this problem is still occourring which surely it shouldn't if this is the case as the choke will enrich the amount of air in the fuel mixture, counter acting the broken seal? So I safely ruled out this possibility and now I'm assuming it's something to do with the jets maybe? Like I said I have no idea about repairing bikes so this is probably completely wrong 😂😂 but any help as to what is causing this or even a solution would be much appreciated, cheers! ____________________ 🍜🍝🍜🍝 |

That is quite a problem for a first post on here. But not the best way to introduce yourself to BCF.
But it sounds as though the piston has seized at some time during your homebound journey and the piston rings have stuck.
Good luck.
It sounds expensive ____________________ Just talk bikes. What else is there?

You don't know the first thing about bike mechanics do you?
You have mentioned LOADS of random shit you have thought of or done, that shows an awful lot of enthusiasm, quite a bit of reasoning, and probably a lot of reading up...
But you still don't know the first thing about Mechanics...... which is.... Make a Cuppa!
The next 'first thing' though is CHECK THE SPARK PLUG!
Its a two-stroke.. they don't like old or shitty plugs... could just be fouled or old... and if you have been effing about with the auto-lube adjustment that;s actually VERY likely!
Shitty plug.. bike will be hard to start.. then it wont like running very well, then it can 'clear' as the crap on the plug starts to burn off, and then it'll foul up again, cos of whatever the real problem is, like effing about randomly with carb and auto-lube adjustments.... meanwhile fouled plug adds a buggered plug to your list of maladies!
Put it all back to the book settings, take the plug out, and compare to pictures in the book..
Then put a new plug in, and see what happens then... and before effing anything else up.. IF your problems persist, make a cuppa... then take the plug out, compare to pictures, and follow the advice under the picture that looks most like the plug in your hand.....
Is likely you have suffered a 'nip-up' and the rings have been smeared into the piston, and it could get expensive chasing down the damage done.. but.. after the cuppa ALWAYS look at the spark plug! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Sounds like you've suffered a couple of heat-seizures and lost some compression as Fizzer said.
No real way out of that except for a top-end rebuild, then figure out why it was getting so hot. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'
