I'm a 35 yo stuck on an A1 licence but I have full A (tri). I've put a few threads up but I've been looking around and found a trike (i think) which I like but I'm puzzled to f*ck if I can ride it or not.

Now most Piaggio Mp3's are Vehicle type: L3, Wheel plan: 2 Wheels (actually have 3) for the "bike" versions" and Vehicle type: L5 Wheel plan:3 wheels for the Trike versions...

I'm using the https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ web site to check the data, well I've found one for a good price which I like the look of but when I check it's listed as... Vehicle type: L3 Wheel plan:3 wheels

L3 means, A two-wheeled vehicle with an engine cylinder capacity in the case of a thermic engine exceeding 50 cm³ or whatever the means of propulsion a maximum design speed exceeding 50 km/h.

So how can a L3 have 3 Wheels! I'm as confused as f*ck.

Trikes are for gays and people with disabilities. If you fit neither, I'd suggest doing DAS and getting something sick, fireblade or similar.

I get very nervous when taking tests and though i'm very relaxed when driving, I'm prone to f*cking up under tests conditions.

My wife is out of work I can't afford to pee money up against a wall by taking a DAS and hiring the bike plus the test fee's and failing. On my 125 I passed the Mod 1 third try and the Mod 2 first and I was less nervous as £15 isn't that bad to lose.

I don't think many disabled people ride MP3's as its just like a bike to handle. I ride a bike cause it's practical and cheaper than getting the train, the MP3 fulfills those credentials.

But... you know you can pass the tests. And they're easier on a bigger bike.

I know this isn't what you're asking but to be honest I've got no interest in looking up trike definitions and legislation because they're for gays and people with disabilities.

In practice, do you think you'll be able to find a copper, insurer or anyone else who will really care? You have trike entitlement, it's got 3 wheels, you'll probably bawww about homophobia or prejudice against cripples if they make an issue of it.

Mp3 lt is what you are looking for to drive on a car licence

But they are not cheap as they are fairly new and rare

It would be cheaper to pass test and buy said fireblade

Seems reasonable vs a Varadero 125 from 06 with 12k on the clock for the same price.

I don't want a Fireblade, I want some thing cheap to run, practical with the minimum of fuss.

It was a 58 500 with 7k on the clock for £2500

Ninja 250. I can't help but recommend one. I ragged the balls out of it on twisties with an RSV Mille chasing me down and not once did I roll off the throttle. Economical too!!

Just remember that extra wheel and all the gubbins that go with that are going to be extra work.

MP3 Forum

Quote:

    COST PER MILE £ 0.27
    COST PER YEAR £ 1,612.79
    COST PER MONTH £ 134.40
    COST PER WEEK £ 31.02
    COST PER DAY £ 4.42

I would guess at a CG 125 being a lot cheaper to run.

I ride a CBF 125, its done over 21,000 miles with about 18 miles a day berried in the red at motorway speed. it's starting to show the signs of needing serious work doing to it.

Those costs above are from new with depreciation also two belts and stealer main servicing. I'm looking to buy used.

Just a guide.

You are happy to spend £2.5K on one of these.

Just think how far that would go fixing your 125 or being put to full test and a larger bike.
Or just another 125.

1.
My choices are, get a used 125 which would be the best part of £1500 for a good used one, fix the exhaust issue and engine rattle on my current CBF which could be £600+ if I use good parts and labour. I may then have other things go wrong in the future.

Both of those mean I have a 125 which limits my ability to commuting only.

2.
Take the bloody 3 tests again for a DAS The Theory isn't an issue i'm in control in that test. It's the Mod 1 and 2 which give me panic attacks.

This would be about £120 for the tests and then extra for a bike course or renting the bikes from a school. then there is the taking time off work, and the stress like failing my mod 1 for for doing 1kmh too low twice in pouring rain for the emergency stop. I passed the Mod 2 first time, but I have worries about that too as in my first car test a car ran a red light and crashed into my test car.

This is the Ideal in a perfect world option as I can drive anything.

3.
Get an Mp3 and just get on with it...

As for £2.5k for the Mp3 , a Fazer about the same age would cost more, and ER6f about £2.7k...

Given you already passed the 125 test. Do you have to do theory & mod 1 again?

TBH. You seem to have already made your mind up. If you are unsure as to the legality of riding one on your licence. Then contact a dealer as they should be in a good place to give the correct advice. Thumbs Up

As to the rest of us here, we are simply taking a guess as to how the regs read and our interpretation of them

It's not the LT version which has a slightly wider wheel span between the front wheels

It's only ridable on a bike licence its a daft law but it is a law

Anyway, an MP3 isn't a trike, its a three-wheeled wankmobile.
For gays.

They're the only thing on the road that lends the BMW C1 an air of semi-respectability ... well, okay, that might be pushing the envelope a bit Shifty

But at least its only got two frickin wheels.

MTFU. If your balls are this small and faggoty you shouldn't even be on the road, just take public transport to Dignitas and do yourself a favour.
