Just looking for a topbox that can hold a helmet, gloves and some light waterproofs. Anyone recommend a half decent one that doesn't cost the earth.
Cheers

I have an old givi box in use at the moment. its a box shape E45 model, its sturdy and large enough for 2 full face helmets. came with a bike I bought so don't know the price but it works well bolted through the pillion seat of my cbr.

Cheap givi range should be fine.

They'll generally advertise if they can hold a helmet.

Ebay.

Mine is a tech 7 branded but its listed under other names and sizes, but actually the same one. Look for 45-62 liters, cost 20-30 quid delivered from uk sellers. It will fit two lids and is quite happy at high speeds.

whats most relevant is what bike you have .. and your price range.

givi monokey are expensive but the shell is ridged..
better for larger bikes..

givi monolock are half the price but not so ridged .. better for commuters..

they look remarkably the same too .. Thumbs Up

I have the Givi B33NMK, big enough for a fullface/flipfront plus other bit's n bobs, and not outlandishly large, it's the monokey so more ££, but comes off and goes on with the press of a button if needed.
got it from germany (moto24) as it was a bit cheaper, and arrived quickly

Givi monokey are generally bigger and can carry up to 10kgs. Givi Monolock are the smaller range and generally say you shouldn't exceed 3kg. Used ones still hold their price, I picked up a 52 litre Monokey for £75, but new ones are upwards of £180.

Second option, get a generic base plate and a cheapo top box. Quality won't be as good though.

I find the Givi very useful, as you can remove the box with a single key and press of a button. The generic ones will need bolting on so not good if you want to take it off in a hurry.

Givi's usually have some fancy system to remove box from bike - do you really care to do this?!? They also have recessed handles, they eat into the usable space.

Leave it permanently attached, it will be stronger if bolted directly and thieves can not remove easily.

Buy some M8 x 60mm 12.9 bolts to attach it with. If it bolted securely there is no issue with high speeds with 20kg, rather than the pathetic 3kg most specify.

Plenty of cheaper ones can be removed.

I definitely liked being able to remove it - can use it as a 'bag' - take stuff into work in it, shopping in at home etc.

Also can easily take it off if you want the 'space' for something else.

If I want a bag, I'll put a bag in my box. I would always leave box on bike, it will contain my boots and lid while I'm at work. No point carrying those in with me.

If I want to remove it, my modified rentec rack - which it is attached to has 4x M8 bolts into the subframe. Its very easy to remove which I do for fast group rides Twisted Evil

It's so easy to turn a key, press button and detatch a box, and carry it inside as suitcase/briefcase/toolkit/lunchbox. One was great. Now touring with one on each side. Can't get a rack that fits my bike that fits three or i would have three.

I have just put a Shad SH48 on my Tracer and its great. Hold 2 helmets or 1 helmet and all my gear. Looks a bit nicer than the Givi offerings to my eyes too.

What bike is it for?

I've got a 44L Dr Bike branded item on my XL600, from J&S - takes my full face, gloves, waterproofs, spare trainers and a bit more, or a few day's food shopping and a six pack, depending on what you want.

Easily demountable with a single turnscrew and about 50 quid, complete with base plate.

Works for me Smile
