which hdd to get

After another HDD failure (samsung 1tb) I'm staying well away from that make for a while that's 3 that have failed in less than 18 months! I'm after something more reliable in the 2+TB range sata3 and in the up to £100 range. My local pc world seems to stock WD purple 3TB drives for £88 but I was under the impression they were tweaked for security camera type role.

Open to advice from you guys in the know

I tend to find that if you get so many H/D failures. THen you may have other issues.
Usually heat related. So maybe a fan to cool the H/D would be a good idea

HDD reliability is pretty random for the best part, as mentioned above, cooling can potentially be a factor. But as long as you avoid the obvious bad eggs (Seagate 7200.11 1.5tbs were disastrously unreliable for example) you should be ok.

Personally, I had an array of 5 WD green 2tbs that went without a hitch for almost 5 years and are alive and well to this day afaik, I've currently got a trio of ST2000DM001 2TBs that have about 2 years of use on them with no issues as well as a more recent 6 drive Hitachi Deathstar NAS 4TB array that appears to have made it through the premature failure stage with no issues.

It's probably worth noting that some of my good fortune with drives could be attributed to having a well cooled rack mount server to sit them in though

Thanks for the advice guys. Cooling wasn't a problem as the drives were cooled and staggered in the bays and non got warm in use it just seems the disk bearings would fail at low hours use .......I managed to recover the data from the last hdd failure by turning the drive over and it still seems to be working but has been removed now and backed up to a same model hdd.....which given the previous failures will die in the next 3 months! Looks like WD next on the shopping list

I use loads of WD Green at work for desktop PC's etc and a WD Black at home for my gaming HDD (5-6 years old)

Just moved over to a Sandisk Extreme PRO SSD which comes with a 10 year warranty!

just for an update I got the 2TB wd black and an icy dock drive bay with the inbuilt cooling fan....kinda thought the easy remove drives made sense with all the video and photography work i do .......so far so good! even bought a couple of caddys to put the SSD's into the same setup. the WD black is holding 180mbs data rate..the old samsungs were hitting 120ish so a noticable increase in speed when loading TIFF files in photoshop!!Even though they are both 7200rpm!! not a scratch on the 480+ I'm getting from the SSD's tho but a pleasant decrease in work time waiting for the files to load as i usually open 10 at a time to edit!!

now for a new graphics card as the ati 6870 is toaster like even playing world of tanks you can feel the warm air pumping out of the tower after just 10 mins

back to nvidea me thinks so i can get the GPU working on rendering the video stuff. Whilst Im liking the look of the gtx970 im wondering if the humble old 750ti would still offer good render times for 1/3 the price!

Wouldn't panic too much tbh, WD Reds are pretty much a pumped up Green in a frock. No relation to the Black at all afaik?

Still, Backblaze's charts were arguably the main reason I went with HGST this time round, very useful data that

aye the data did make me look for the HGST option but ended up with the black and so far its at least offering good performance for vid and pic editing! I've just bagged a nvidia GT750 Ti OC for £82 delivered so lets see how that helps with the cuda option in Adobe !!!! its the Asus version which whilst many years ago I used to be happy with for mobo's etc not sure what the newer graphics cards are like!

Still at least I'll be able to play world of tanks without toasting marsh mellows on the exhaust port of the PC!!
