So, my brothers car is burning oil and misfiring because of a fouled plug. Took it too a garage who said the compression on cylinder 3 was low and it would need the rings doing.

They then quoted £1400 to repair it... Shocked He didn't even buy the car for anywhere near that... Problem is he doesn't have that kind of throwaway money.. Spent his savings buying this car.

So, what's his best option? I was thinking the route of buying another engine. They appear on eBay for about £250. Also looked into Reconditioned engines, but none of the websites will give me price without filling my life story out Confused

I don't really have the tools or space to work on a car engine or to change one over, so would probably have to get someone else to do it.

As far as I know its a 1.6 2003 8v Astra, think the engine code is z16se... What would bcf recommend?

With a quote like that what they really mean is "Fuck off elsewhere" we do not want the hassle of doing this.

Personally 1st option. Swap plugs over and take it for a "Italian tuneup" to see if that will free the rings up.

It would also help for some more info such as mileage and cost.

Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and scrap it.

How would de-cating it ruin the compression on no. 3?

The quick solution is a second hand engine. Most internet breakers have a months guarentee so if it's fucked you should be able to get your money back.

A mate had one and when he decat`d it, it ran terrible, fouled up plugs and mis fired, may not be related to the comp test but a lot of young uns do it without knowing it can cause other issues,
no kittens were harmed in asking such questions . . .

I'd look for another car and scrap that maybe, unless you can fall over an engine for next to nothing?

if you go bigger on the car, then £250 will get you more car, and a newer low mileage vehicle than looking for a popular family hatch. For example a big Saab or Alfa saloon can be dirt cheap for the year and with lowish miles, as people don't want low mpg or the tax costs.

Bang a new set of plugs in and flog it on gumtree. Then buy another shitter off of gumtree. Lots of cheap cars around if you look hard enough.

It's just as likely to be a problem with the cylinder head, as the pistons/rings/bores, so can you narrow it down as to what you actually need doing to fix it?

Replacing a couple of burned-out valves should be cheaper than replacing the whole engine.

If you do change the engine getting someone else to do it will still be pricey

Scrap it and start again

How much did he pay for it? Scrapping / gumtree sounds the best option if not alot.

Grab a cheap saxo or something to keep him going and cut your losses.
