Got a small scuff on my XLite carbon lid after an off - never donked the ground or bike with it, no cracks, no impact etc so polished it out and all is well looking at it.

Question is ditch it or keep it?

Its about a 50/50 with friends etc with shops obviously saying new one so they can sell me one.

Here's the helmet in question.

It's fine.

The main protection comes from what's inside the lid, the shell is there to protect that.

How did you get the scuff if you didn't hit the ground or bike?

I'd likely be happy to keep using it.

I've rode with helmets in worse cosmetic condition, meh, put the visor back on and you won't even notice it.

Looks like a nice lid Thumbs Up

Mine is covered in little scrapes like that, the peg I stick it on is right next to the wall so it scrapes.

Also have a few larger marks from where stones/wildlife have impacted with a bit of a bang.

If it is a medium it is totalled and dangerous.

lid will be fine.


The helmet not cracking doesn't mean it is not harmed. The material inside could be deformed.

However original posters helmet is probably fine based on what he said.

Can you take your helmet anywhere to check its internal integrity? Heard some dealers saying they have special days where you can come in and get that checked... Question

Me too, exactly what I assumed.

Although that scuff indicates at least a slight sliding contact, and I guess there would have been pressure applied to the area, still would wear it with confidence if no chips or hairline cracks visible.

Good job done polishing that out as NJD said.

Why is there a chip near the visor seal ?

Looking at the state of the bike and the fact that you don't remember the accident I'd be getting that lid replaced. No point having a fancy shiny helmet if you can't be sure of its structural integrity.
