Is there anything can be got for fairly cheap that i can drop rusty nuts/bolts in and fish them out (how long they stay in there is not all that important) reasonably clean?

I know coke will clean pennys, will it clean bolts? viniger? anything else worth a try?

Theres rust treatments about but being a cheapass i'd like to avoid spending anything at the moment (though its gonna need some money throwing at it at some point...)

Any handy hints?

Muracic Acid from yer local swimming pool suppliers, use a plastic or stainless pot, 20/80 mix of acid/water & it takes the rust, paint etc (& any remaining plating) off em in about 20 seconds.

It may be that just getting new ones is the cheapest ass way of doing it. 300 piece assorted M5, M6, M8 and M10 nut and bolt kit is £10.92 plus VAT and postage HERE

They are probably even cheaper elsewhere, certainly easier than cleaning old ones!

Otherwise a good soak in light oil/WD40, a rub with some wire wool. Then carefully cut a slot in the side of a nut with a hacksaw, screwing it up and down the oiled bolt will clean out the threads (a die is better if you have one). Dremmeling a slot along the length of a bolt will do the same for nuts in the absence of a proper tap.

Thanks all...

SW- VWP is about 10minutes away from me Very Happy i didn't realise they did bolt sets, think i might get some anyway...

Theres some spacers and other bits that need cleaning too, not sure what else i can use this on, such as wheel hubs, coil is a bit rusty too... hmmmm

ZRX61 - Muracic Acid, nasty! sounds interesting, could it be brushed onto spokes to clean them up? when you say the plateing would it eat straight through chrome then? i'm not sure theres any under there anyway! not to worried, for the cost of rechromeing the forks, i could get 4 new pairs of forks (maybe more) Shocked

edit : just noticed, the right hand side caseing is held on with... SCREWS?? wtf??
