I have a lenovo flex 2 14 inch. I5 4210u (1.7 GHz, 2.7 GHz with TurboBoost, 3 MB cache), 6gb ddr3 and a 500gb sshd 5400rpm.

The woman has a 13 inch Mac book pro mid 2012. I5 processor 2.5ghz (3.1 with turbo boost), 4gb ddr3 ram and a 500gb 5400 hdd.

She doesn't use her Mac. Im Getting back in to photography. Will be used for editing 24mp raw images in light room and photoshoot (torrent copies).

Never had a mac although they obviously have a reputation with editing. My laptop feels faster although it's currently being repaired under warrantee for the 2nd time (keeps randomly becoming unresponsive and then crashing and failing to restart. It's had a new hdd but I'm hoping they swap the memory next.)

Do I upgrade the mac with more ram and a sad?

Do I canabalise mine and stick the ram and hdd in to the mac the sell mine?

Just sell the mac?

Sell both and build a tower?

Opinions?

If you sell the mac you can recover around £500-600, depending on condition - that could go towards a new build nicely. If you don't like OS X probably best to get rid of it.

However, given the option I'd upgrade the mac. More ram (unofficially they support 16GB ram) and an SSD would help matters - standard drive is a 5400 rpm sata (6Gb/s). An SSD will make a massive difference to the overall performance. Both ram and ssd can be added relatively cheaply.

Video card is Intel HD Graphics 4000 but it supports and external 2nd screen at a max res of 2560x1600.

Serious question, are you mental?

Macs are terrible for ram efficiency.
Terrible.

Also, I wouldnt build a tower when Phil has a very decent rig for sale.

Daughters was a bitch for doing this & changing the settings has cured it Thumbs Up

Go into energy manager and set it to conservation mode.... (bottom right & up arrow to show hidden icons)

Seems they do not like the battery being @ 100% for prolonged periods....

Might be, and Macs are terrible for everything. The money you've got to waste to get decent performance is ridiculous. Thumbs Up

Perhaps because you're going around running them on 4Gb RAM. Memory is cheap these days.

Are you on crack Rhyno?

No, current version Snow Leopard currently costs £14.99, nowhere near 40% of the price of a macbook
Quote:

Might be less, the marketing and branding also cost money of course. I mean the real value of the HW on the market vs. the price of a Apple device using that HW+their OS.

It is less, far less in fact.

Quote:

4GB of RAM in the Mac, is more than it will ever need, so more RAM wouldn't make it any better actually.

4GB in a mac is barely enough to run an OS, I just changed Mrs from 4 to 8GB just for doing some stats work and office stuff. The OS alone needs nearly 3GB of RAM, It's ludicrous how much RAM is used by OSX.

4GB of RAM on a decent OS, is still short on running lightroom and Photoshop with 24mp raw files.

Quote:

A ''tower'' PC is the best way to go. It's the cheapest solution with the best price/performance ratio.

Not always, there are plenty of laptops capable of doing this work. Many photographers also do work on site, where a tower is really not going to help.

Plus, photo editing is really not very hard on the CPU, so not much heat will be generated where towers have the massive advantage in cooling.

Quote:

4GB in a Mac isn't enough to type a word document about how wrong you are.

Groove, don't take advice from somebody that still runs Vista with the belief that it is a decent OS Wink

Sure sure, so Mac users know it's crap, yet they are buying it. Am I missing something? I stand corrected, I have never thought Apple got that far, that it needs 4GB of RAM to just run the OS. Win 7 and 8, 8.1 is pretty alright, for the basic stuff with, only 2GB (2x1024MB) of RAM. Once again, you might say I'm mental, but I tried it and it was alright for the office work and the internet (7, 64bit).

Now looking at what Apple sells and the basic models do have 4GB of RAM and the prices are as mental as I recall them. Rolling Eyes

Don't tell me a laptop bought for the same money you'd put into a desktop has got the same performance though.

Also when I said enough or not enough of RAM, I was not really aware of someone would actually run an OS that its minimum requirement was 4GB of RAM.

Generally, the build quality of macs are quite impressive. Not impressive enough for me to buy one.

They are also a fashion item, people buying them are often a victim of branding and fashion.

Obviously not, but if you read my post. If he's doing photo work, then there are many times you may be editing away from home. If he can afford 1 or the other, being able to edit on site can be more important than more power.

OP wants to do a specific task, it doesn't need to have as much power as possible. It just needs to have enough power.

So you commented about the suitability of a system in which you have no experience or knowledge?

Yes, it's been a couple of years since I saw an Apple OS and I did make a stupid assumption, that they keep up with the competitors. Thumbs Up

The minimum requirement is 2Gig - the experience wont be that good however.

People seem to be obsessed with how much free ram they have, free ram is unused, wasted ram. Fill it with cache data which you can release if it's needed elsewhere. This is what happens in OS X.

There's 4 'types' of ram in OS X

Free: Ram you're not using for anything, it's wasted RAM - you don't need much of this. If more ram is required it's recovered from the inactive part.

Wired: Required by the system, can't be swapped out.

Active: Applications are using this or have just released it (within a second or two)

Inactive: Anything the system has read from disk, network etc - this is why when you close an application and then restart it again a few minutes later the application startup time is reduced. The same for re-reading data

And here arrives the mac fanbois. Who must strongly oppose any suggestion that Apple is not the fantastic product they market it as.

My £200 HP laptop boots in to Win 8.1 and opens Word, quicker than my Mrs £1200 MacBook Pro with fresh install.

There is nothing on my Mrs MBP apart from, SPSS, Stata, Office and iTunes. Yet it still constantly hogs memory.

Amazing that a mac support site suggests to run applications in 32-bit mode. Never had to do that with Windows.................

When I get to the laptop again, I will post up a screenshot of the memory usage with it just on the desktop.

OS X, really has lost all its advantages over the recent versions. And you spend half the time hoping that an update doesn't render your expensive products useless.

So if you don't buy into the groupthink that Apples is shit then your a fanboi.

The main issue with a 2012 macbook is that it's a 3 year old design, that said chuck a ssd into it and you've got a speedy old box, you could go to 8GB but the bang for buck isn't as good.

The only people I know that haven't given up on Windows long ago, are the ones paid to look after it.

No, the ones that buy into the group think that OS X is better than Windows.

Yet there's very little that it does better, especially for the cost.

Everybody I know that uses OS X, also has a Windows boot on it, as they can't do what they need under OS X.

I general OSX is a much nicer place to be than windows, the whole windows 8.1 interface is an abortion.

As to your previous comment whats wrong with running apps in 32bit mode very few of them need to be using 64bit and the memory reduction can be quite high.

64bit isn't the massive advance that microsoft would have you believe the unix world has had 64bit since the 90's and still many programs run in 32 bit as there's no need to be in 64bit mode.

Nothing is wrong with it.

But why should an end user have to deal with that, just to get it to run properly.

So what are the advantages to running OS X over Windows, and why is it worth the extra £600?

The don't have to, but if they are having issues it's an option provided to them. My missus's 8.1 machine is hacking all the time and there's not much I can do about it.

OSX isn't £600 more expensive that Windows. The last updates for both were free IIRC.

Probably shouldn't have bothered asking Laughing

I'll see what real world performance is when I'm at a stage to edit a file on both machines. I'll pick the winrarrrr that way. I'll then decide what needs upgrading.

I would probably prefer to keep a laptop. Saves me being confined to the bedroom when I could be lounging on the sofa.

Sod you bickering bitches Laughing

But even at entry level. You're looking at an extra £600 over windows based laptops.

Admittedly the Apple build quality is fantastic, but in terms of technology, there's very, very little benefit to running OSX

I've not check for a while but last time I did it's not £600, and that build quality has a value, my last macbook is outlasted 2 pc's of my wife's.

So as far as I'm concerned the build quality combined with the fact that I don't have to run Windows is more than covered by the difference in price.
