The US only has one State (California) out of 50 that allow for lane splitting/filtering... and actually there is no law allowing motorcyclists to split in CA but, there is also no law saying they can't. Unfortunately the remaining 49 states expressly disallow it.

The general census from entitled American drivers - mainly outside of California is that filtering should be banned. Fearmongering surrounds the issue and many are brought to anger or violence when simply discussing the topic. Not to mention, split where it's not allowed and you may find yourself connecting with an open car door.

QUESTION: If filtering is legal where you're from, what have you found to be the general census/opinion of drivers, motorcyclists or not?

Hi

Over here, just do it. Most of the time, no reason not to do it.

All the best

Ooo, yes. I do like a nice filter.

Gets the adrenaline going in the morning, better than caffeine!!

And in the evening, the hometime commute means you can lively up yourself after a dull day in the office.

Yay.

With the car drivers (I've found anyway), a lot will move over a bit (even on country roads to let you overtake) to allow you to move up to the front of the traffic..... then you get your arseholes who see you approaching in their mirrors and try to close the gap (again the same thing happens on the motorway when they are crawling along at around 10mph)

I weigh up the risks ahead first, depending on what I can or can't see.

Most drivers appear not to mind, some even move over to make more room for you to get pass, these are thanked for their trouble with a friendly wave or thumbs up.

Rarely but, occasionally some will move over to block you in. These I usually greet with either a friendly wave or the finger, depending on my mood, when I inevitably pass them anyway.

What worries me is when your happily sitting at the speed limit, keeping a safe gap and the car in front suddenly makes a dart for the ditch, compelling you to overtake.

Is not grammar, is vocab.

Nazi grammar cat agrees, though: should be consensus, not census.

It's not illegal over here, so just get on with the job of getting on. If you go about it in a careless or reckless manner you might get written-up for an offence but it won't be one of 'filtering'.

Generally car drivers respond to it with apathy.

Most car drivers expect it and don't give a damn.

Some get angry but then some car drivers were angry before they got in their car.

They save their real anger for cyclists blowing red lights.

I find most people move over slightly or do nothing, so I filter past them and think nothing more of it.

I assume most drivers don't care because bikes that get past disappear off up the road and don't hold them up anyway so no harm done.

How many of the 49 states that ban filtering (presumably on safety grounds) allow riding without a helmet?

I'm unsure of the number but, I know it is quite a few. It also surprises me, rather baffles me that states allow riders to go without a helmet yet police are eager to write tickets for not wearing a safety belt. My state in particular doesn't care if you protect your head, but they'll throw the book at you when splitting.

Filtering's fine most of the time, providing you go steady and expect the unexpected. A wave and a nod here and there for those that move over keeps everyone sweet, and as long as you're extra vigilant for stuff like gaps at junctions (where vehicles might pull out of), not getting sandwiched between a couple of HGVs, keeping a very sharp eye for tyre shredding shrapnel when on hatched areas, and maybe even resisting the urge altogether if the road curves leftwards etc. etc. etc. then I say go for it. To not make the most of a bike's manoeuvrability and size boarders on the unethical tbh.

I got into motorbiking for the slight cheapness of relative fuel economy, and the major convenience of cutting past traffic.

To me, there is nothing better than cruising past a huge traffic jam of cars, the longer the better.

And I lived in London last year and I loved the way my motorbike turned the clogged, busy roads of the main central area into, well, normal easy-to-navigate roads where you can get from A to B as smooth as anywhere else.

Filtering is fantastic.

Occasional knob heads of course but it seems generally accepted by most drivers if done sensibly.
Had many move over to make it easier for me too and I try to give em wave of thanks if possible.

Heard some horror stories of US drivers getting all bent out of shape at US bikers lane splitting.
Deliberately opening doors and worse the bastards.

Its allowed pretty much anywhere so long as its safe to do so. As for other drivers, why do you care what they think when they're 17 cars behind you in the queue Cool

I feel as though I've seen an increase in both types of action, of late - had an especially nasty cunt last week, decided it would be good sport to close the gap, while heading towards me, with no place for me to go on the nearside Rolling Eyes

I suppose the positive is, whether they're giving way or acting the arse, they are noticing us, so maybe the 'Think Bike' campaign is finally working.

I find this attitude in the US most bizarre, mention splitting to folks (including those who park their fat arses on cruisers Wink ) and anyone would think that you'd just dumped in their mouth. Besides, if we can't trust a good ol' gun toting Christian to open his door on us to save us from our errant ways whom should we trust? Rolling Eyes
On the flip side, US drivers, especially city drivers, are abysmal and chop lanes without looking so it's probably in the best interests of bikers that they don't filter. After a little road trip this last week I've witnessed the worst driving I've ever seen in the cities of Atlanta and Houston, seen numerous accidents including an artic that took out a few cars before jack-knifing into the verge, just about every muppet texts and talks which makes for interesting overtakes, especially when it's an artic, when the dopey cunts are weaving all over the carriageway.

At least when I get stopped speeding I'm the wrong colour to warrant getting shot on sight Sad

Here in the UK it can get rather stupid (people closing in on you, refusing to move) when filtering considering the British are supposed to be known for there politeness most don't bother moving over. However I was in France two weekends ago and it was amazing just how many cars just move over. When I say move over I mean give about a cars width of a gap down the middle.
